Professionals bring their stress home, study finds
More money, power make things worse
SIRI AGRELL
Globe and Mail, Jan. 13, 2010
First you get the money, then you get the power, then you get the problems
at home.
Well-educated professionals, even those who have control over the hours they
work, are likelier to say their jobs interfere with their personal lives.
According to a new study, it's "the stress of higher status."
"It's the Mad Men idea," said study author Scott Schieman, a sociology
professor at the University
of Toronto, referring to the popular TV drama. "When you get more, are there
consequences?"
Using data from a survey of 1,800 American workers, Prof. Schieman found
that almost half bring their work home with them, and their relationships suffer because
of it.
But he also discovered that those with college or postgraduate degrees are
more likely to say work interferes with their personal lives. And those who succeed at
work seem to have it worse. The study found that job authority, skill level,
decision-making latitude and personal earnings also predicted trouble outside of the office.
"Most people would say that those should actually lower the risk for
work-family conflict, but we're finding the opposite," Prof. Schieman said.
It's not just about putting in long hours. Professionals with the most
control over their own schedule had the highest levels of stress.
Howard Eisenberg, a Toronto-area psychologist who has counselled CEOs and
company presidents, said people who excel at their jobs are often incapable of
switching off their work mode. "To achieve that level in the hierarchy
requires a lot of self-sacrifice," he said. "But once they're there, it's sometimes a psychological coping
mechanism to keep that engaged. Not because they have to prove anything, but because
of their anxiety."
BlackBerrys and other technology keep professionals constantly connected to
the office, and Dr. Eisenberg said the resulting pressure can lead to anger, depression,
or drug or alcohol dependence.
It's usually a health scare that causes people to rethink their approach to work,
he said. They may also do so because they made a mistake at work that
illuminated their stress levels. "The warning sign can also be a spouse saying they've
had it," Dr. Eisenberg said.
Gerald Butts, the CEO of conservation group WWF Canada, remembers his son
being born during a particularly busy time at his previous job, as right-hand man to
Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty. Seeing little of him, his wife decided to take the
baby to visit Mr. Butts's brother, a lung cancer specialist, and his wife.
When she returned, having witnessed her brother-in-law's equally hectic
schedule, she told her husband she had learned something valuable.
"It's actually got nothing to do with your job," she told him. "You're all
like this."
Mr. Butts does not equate high-status jobs with high levels of stress. "I
think the biggest mistake that people make in positions of leadership is not having a
conscious strategy to leave your work problems at work and mentally carve out space
for your personal life," he said.
His new job, which recently found him at the United Nations Climate Change
Conference in Copenhagen, is just as demanding as his previous one, but offers more
control over his time.
He left the Premier's office in June, 2008, and two weeks later was woken by a massive
propane explosion near his west-end Toronto home.
"Literally the first thing that went through my mind was 'Holy smokes, I've
got to call cabinet office,' " he said. "Then I realized, 'Actually I don't. I'm
just going back to sleep.' That was a great feeling."

Hello there! I'm Matt Chadwick, your friendly Café friend and it's a brand new week with lots to share and discuss. I hope that everyone had a great weekend.
Today, I would like to share a really great article with you; all a bout breaking technology. The Wayfinding maps technology that can benefit everyone.
I invite you now to read on and I thank the folks at http://www.sterlingcreations.ca for sending this along to us.
Have a great day.
We've just added this article to the Accessible Devices Website. Since we seem to have encountered a Spam filter issue when we try to send the article we're sending you a link to it on our website.
ClickAndGo Wayfinding Maps
A cutting edge navigation tool that promises to make travel much easier and offer a lot more independence for blind and deaf-blind travelers was launched at the Assistive Technology Industry Association (ATIA) conference October 29 through 31 in Chicago, Ill.
The system is called ClickAndGo Wayfinding Maps and it offers detailed narrative route descriptions that help vision impaired people successfully find their way to unfamiliar destinations. The maps are free to users and can be accessed by telephone.
"This is modeled after the popular „directions? feature of Yahoo, Google, and MapQuest maps," said inventor and mobility specialist Joe Cioffi, who has 28 years experience teaching blind and deaf-blind clients white cane techniques. "With Internet maps, sighted users select a starting point and destination from a drop-down menu and then click "go" for driving directions. "We adapted ClickAndGo Wayfinding Maps by adding the options of voice output or Braille that literally walks blind and deaf-blind people through the route to the destination with customized „mobility-friendly? walking directions," Cioffi said.
Rather than depend on strangers for directions, blind ATIA Conference attendees picked up a telephone or will use a computer to access a website, give their point of origin and destination, and hear specific directions to help them find their way independently to the Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel and Convention Center's registration desk, interior restaurants, ballrooms and function rooms, restrooms, guide dog relief areas, and other destinations.
A caller may hear, for example: "After entering through the main doors, the flooring changes from carpet to tile. There are two elevators along the right side wall, 25 feet away. The elevator call button is located between the 2 elevators. Enter and press floor 2. Exit on floor 2 and walk straight. In 10 feet you will reach entry doors separating the elevator foyer from the main hallway. After these doors, walk straight 5 feet and turn right. You are now facing a 20 foot wide hallway, and straight ahead in 70 feet you will reach the double doors of the hotel ballroom." The directions can be downloaded on a notetaker for later access.
ClickAndGo Wayfinding Maps are mainly intended to help vision impaired travelers more easily orient themselves and move through airports, schools and universities, hotel and convention centers, public parks, amusement parks, tourist destinations, and other public places. But Cioffi also offers customized narrative walking directions for outdoor landmark-to-landmark route travel. All directions and point of interest information can be downloaded through ClickAndGoMaps' fully accessible website as both web pages and MP3 downloads, or obtained by using the company's voice activated technology with a standard telephone.
The system has been praised by users such as Ken Rodgers, who is blind and a Master's candidate at Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, University of Minnesota, and the Past Minnesota Chapter President of the American Council of the Blind. Rodgers said the system offers a level of detail that is unparalleled by any other service or technology today. "The ClickAndGo narrative mapping technology is absolutely phenomenal!" said Rodgers who tested the product at the University. "It's easy to use and will revolutionize the way I find unfamiliar destinations without the fear of getting lost. Talk about maintaining my independence!"
Cioffi is the owner of InTouch Graphic which also produces tactile/low vision maps for people who are blind and vision impaired. ClickAndGo Wayfinding Maps will be offered free to users. Cioffi is hoping to market the product to participating institutions such as airports and hotels that wish to accommodate their customers as well as comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990. The ADA offers some tax incentives and under certain conditions, reimburses businesses up to $15,000 for adaptations that encourage accessibility of public accommodations.
For more information, contact Cioffi at 612-220-6657.

Hey there! I'm Alix Shadonnay your friendly Café friend and a very good day to you. The middle of the week already and I hope that everyone is doing well.

Enjoy your day.
Can blind persons become parents?
By Donna J. Jodhan
This is one of the most frequently asked questions that I am asked and my answer is yes but it is a tempered yes.
It is never easy to be a parent at the best of times whether or not you are blind but for a blind person the challenges are many. Many significant steps have been taken within the past two decades to make it easier for blind moms and dads to become successful parents but there will always be many concerns on this topic.
I myself am not a parent but I have several blind friends who are parents. I would hasten to add that if one of the
parents is sighted it makes things a lot easier for the home and even if one parent has a bit of sight it is much easier than having both parents being without sight. In many cases, if one of the parents is blind and was born with a genetic disease, chances are that their kids will also be born blind. I have seen several situations of a combination of one or both parents being blind and their kids either being born blind or being born fully sighted.
The challenges for both parents being blind and the kids also being blind are different to those for two blind parents having fully sighted children. The challenges for one parent being blind and the kids fully sighted are different to those of one parent being blind and these kids being blind. Confusing you say? Maybe so but when all is said and done, blind persons are no different in their desire to be good parents to their kids whether they are sighted or blind. There are many techniques that blind persons can use to help them raise their kids and these techniques are improving all the time. The important thing is for persons to be fully educated about the potential challenges that they could face as blind parents. I personally know blind dads and sighted moms with sighted kids, blind dads and sighted moms with blind kids, and blind parents with sighted kids. They each have their own unique suite of challenges to deal with but the ones that I know have done very well for themselves. Parents and kids have managed to overcome.
I was born to two wonderful sighted parents and in a subsequent blog I will tell you what it was like growing up with two sighted parents at the helm along with two sighted brothers. My closing advice to any blind person would be: Nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it but you must be prepared to face interesting and ongoing challenges. The road would be a bit longer and bumpier for you but if you really want it, it can be achieved. One of your biggest challenges will undoubtedly come from the rest of society.
I'm Donna J. Jodhan your accessibility consultant wishing you a terrific day and reminding you to go out there and help convince others that blind persons can become parents.

10 Great Housecleaning Tips
Here are ten great house cleaning tips that will start you on your way to a sparkling clean house with the minimum of effort.
1. Devise your own house cleaning schedule
This will allow you to break down the cleaning of the whole house into more manageable daily tasks. With a good house cleaning schedule, keeping your home clean will not seem the daunting task it once was.
2. Examine each room in detail.
This will help you to determine where the trouble spots are, the areas that need the most attention, or are the most difficult to keep clean.
3. Keep all your cleaning supplies and equipment together
This will help make sure that you have everything you need for your cleaning tasks, it will also help save time by not having to run around finding what you need.
4. Use Natural Cleaning Products.
This can save you time and money and can also help to protect your health and that of your family.
5. Declutter your home
Why clean things that you don’t have to. If your the kind of person or family that hordes things, chances are you have piles of junk lying around collecting dust. Declutter on a regular basis and your home will look tidier and will be easier and faster to clean.
6. Play lively music when cleaning
This will help the time pass quickly and take your mind off the fact that you are actually cleaning. Try it, it really does work.
7. Don’t get distracted
When we are doing something that we really do not want to do its very easy to become distracted. Avoid leaving the TV on while your cleaning and try to avoid answering the telephone.
8. Enlist the family
Well its only fair, after all, chances are you didn’t make all the mess, so why should you clean it all up. Give family members specific cleaning duties and write them into your schedule.
9. Hire a Cleaning Company.
If you can afford it, its a great idea to get a professional cleaning company to clean your house once a year. This can give you a great starting point to work from.
10. Devise a house cleaning maintenance plan.
Now your house is clean and tidy, make sure it stays that way, by ensuring problem areas are addressed quickly.

SONY PICTURES HOME ENTERTAINMENT PARTNERS WITH WGBH MEDIA ACCESS GROUP
TO DELIVER DESCRIPTIVE VIDEO SERVICE ON HOME VIDEO TITLES
Culver City, Calif. (Sept 3, 2009) – Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will partner with WGBH Media Access Group to release select film titles on DVD with Descriptive Video Service®, or DVS® as an optional feature for audiences who are blind or have low vision. Descriptive Video Service provides carefully crafted narration of key visual elements inserted into natural pauses in dialogue. Key visual elements are those which viewers with vision loss would ordinarily miss and include actions, costumes, gestures, facial expressions, scene changes and onscreen text. On DVD and Blu-ray™, the DVS track is an Audio option, listed alongside alternative languages, where the menu selection will read “English Audio Descriptive Service.”
The ability to enjoy movies with descriptive narration on DVD and Blu-ray Disc™ is extremely important to the nation’s 12 million movie fans with vision loss, and is the single most requested service of the Media Access Group. Among the first Sony Pictures Home Entertainment titles to be released with the description feature are The Taking of Pelham 123, The Ugly Truth, Julie & Julia and District 9.
Sony Pictures has been a leader over the last decade in providing descriptive audio for theatrical releases in movie theaters equipped with WGBH’s Motion Picture Access, or MoPix® systems. Greetings everyone! I'm Jayna Sheffield, your friendly Café friend and I would like to wish you a very happy New Year. 2010 is here and boy it's a new decade as well.
Today, I am delighted to present our weekly feature; an editorial by our favourite lady Donna J. Jodhan; advocate, business woman, and blogger/writer/editorialist.
Here now is Donna's editorial of the week.
Have a great day.
Disabled is not my occupation
A few weeks ago I went to the post office to retrieve a money gram. For those of you who do not know what a money gram is: A money gram is used to send funds internationally. The sender buys the money gram and is given a transaction number which they then give to the receiver so that the receiver can then go to the post office and present to the post mistress or master. The number is then used to retrieve the funds and upon successful completion of the transaction the receiver is presented with a cheque. Nice and clean you say? It is but on this day I had a very interesting encounter with the post mistress.
When I presented the number to her, I also had to present personal identification and fill out a form. My friend filled out the form for me and everything was going well until the post mistress asked me: "What is your occupation? Disabled?" Needless to say, both my friend and I were absolutely flabbergasted. I almost fell on the floor but after a few seconds I managed to reclaim my composure and calmly responded: "No! I am a systems engineer." My friend later told me that in turn I had managed to shock the post mistress. He said that if I could have seen the look on her face I would have been very happy because one surprise was countered with another. The post mistress immediately apologized.
This has been the story of my life and it has been for several of my fellow blind and visually impaired friends who are professionals. Society as a whole still does not think that blind and visually impaired persons can and do work for a living. They either regard us as persons who need to be looked after or they do not have any regard for us at all. In short, we are the disregarded. There are the precious few who do respect our abilities but I will say that on the whole our society still does not give much credence to our existence.
Similar types of reactions often occur when I go to fill out immigration documents. Everything is going along fine until they ask for my occupation and when I tell them that I am a systems engineer, most do not believe me. Sometimes I need to expand on my occupation. In general, people do not believe that I work for a living and in the past whenever I had to list my place of employment I was often met with total shock. Some of the more notable reactions that come to mind continue to be:
"You work for a living?"
"How can you work when you are blind?"
"May be IBM hired you as a token?"
It has taken me many years of cultivated temper to ignore these types of comments but it has not been easy. I used to get very upset and angry but not anymore. Thanks to wonderful parents, and family and friends, I have learned to ignore the naive statements and have replaced my emotional feelings with a dignified smile and calm response. However, because of my wicked sense of humor, I may just respond one day to the next person who asks for my occupation. "Disabled."
I'm Donna J. Jodhan your accessibility and special needs consultant wishing you a terrific day and reminding you to go out there and spread the word that contrary to popular belief, there are many blind and visually impaired persons who work for a living.

Your Tallest Flakiest Shortcakes Ever
If your strawberry shortcake isn't as fluffy as usual, check the baking powder in your pantry. Over time the ingredient loses it's puff power, leading to baked goods that don't rise as high. To avoid this, record the date of purchase on the lid and toss after 6 months.

Potato Pancakes
Don't know what to do with that little bit of mashed potatoes?
Make potato pancakes.
Stir the potatoes with some milk and baking powder.
The consistency of regular pancakes.
Fry in a little bit of butter or margarine, making them about the size of dollar pancakes.
If you wish, add some onion or grated cheese or both.
Serve with sour cream or spread cheese. Delicious!!

Crumbly Frosting
Your powdered sugar frosting won't dry and crumble as fast if you always add just a pinch of baking powder.

The Secret To Shinier Sink Fixtures
Soap scum on faucets and sinks? To get rid of the soap scum, using a sponge, dab liquid fabric softener on the soap scum marks and let sit for 15 minutes. Wipe any excess with a warm wet cloth. The softener's fatty acids dissolve the alkaline deposits to reveal a sparkling surface. Even better: The lubricant will leave behind an invisible water repellent coating.

Keep Casseroles Crispy
The best part of lasagna is its golden cheesy topping. To keep the top crisp and the casserole warm, place a paper towel over the top of the dish before wrapping it in foil. The condensation from the hot pasta will be absorbed by the towel instead of forming on the foil and dripping back onto the lasagna, which could make it soggy.

Seed Spicy Chiles Without The Burn
Touching jalapeno peppers often leads to a burning sensation. The pain free way to seed them: Cut off the stem end of the pepper with a knife, then insert a vegetable peeler and rotate. The tool's sharp edges will pull out the spicy ribs and seeds. Then just shake out any remaining seeds and chop as desired...

Wiping Windows
Instead of paper towels, try wiping windows and mirrors with old cloth baby diapers or newspapers. They don't leave dust or lint behind.

Doormat Trip Ups?
Welcome mat won't stay put? To prevent slips and falls, cut an old mouse pad into 4 squares and use a hot glue gun to adhere the pieces to each corner of the bottom of the doormat. The squares' rubbery grip creates friction that'll keep the mat from sliding.

Money Saving Kitchen Tips:
Don't let leftovers die in the refrigerator. Think ahead and use them the next day in omelets, chili, soups, stir-fries, casseroles like macaroni and cheese, and salads.
Develop knife skills. Cutting up your own chicken and boning your own meat saves considerable money. Plus, you have bones for making stock. Whole vegetables are cheaper than cut-up ones, too.
Use your freezer intelligently. Take advantage of supermarket sales. Buy in bulk ground meat, chicken cutlets, poultry parts, steaks, and chops. Wrap and save leftovers from large casseroles such as baked lasagna, meat from roasted leg of lamb, or a baked ham. And date everything you put in the freezer.
MAKE EVERY PENNY COUNT!

Low Fat Cooking Tip
You can successfully saute vegetables, etc., in 1 teaspoon or less of oil in a non-stick pan. Keep olive oil in a pump bottle and in a spray bottle by the stove. For sauteeing, approximately three pumps is a teaspoon of oil, then use a pastry brush to spread the oil in the pan. If you just need to coat the pan lightly with oil, use the spray bottle or a pastry brush to apply oil. Use these methods for sauteing rather than coating the pan with a cooking spray, since the lecithin in the cooking sprays burns easily, and it is impossible to get the pan hot enough for a good saute without burning the spray.

Hello there! I'm Matt Chadwick, your friendly Café friend and a very happy New Year to all.
Hope that everyone had a great holiday season.
Today, I would like to sheare a very interesting article with you; all about Amazon's Kindle.
I wish you a great day and I thank the folks at http://www.sterlingcreations.ca for passing this along to us.
Schools shun Kindle, saying blind can't use it
By RACHEL METZ (AP) - 5 hours ago
SAN FRANCISCO - Amazon's Kindle can read books aloud, but if you're
blind it can be difficult to turn that function on without help. Now
two universities say they will shun the device until Amazon changes
the setup.
The National Federation of the Blind planned to announce Wednesday
that the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Syracuse University
won't consider big rollouts of the electronic reading device unless
Amazon makes it more accessible to visually impaired students.
Both schools have some Kindles that they bought for students to try
this fall, but now they say they won't look into buying more unless
Amazon makes changes to the device.
"These universities are saying, `Our policy is nondiscrimination, so
we're not going to adopt a technology we know for sure discriminates
against blind students,'" said Chris Danielsen, a spokesman for the
National Federation of the Blind.
Amazon.com <http://amazon.com/ Inc. spokesman Drew Herdener said
many visually impaired customers have asked Amazon to make the Kindle
easier to navigate. The company is working on it, he said.
According to the National Federation of the Blind, there are about
1.3 million legally blind people in the U.S. Many more people have
other disabilities such as dyslexia that make it difficult to read.
The Kindle could be promising for the visually impaired because of
its read-aloud feature, which utters text in a robotic-sounding
voice. For blind students in particular, the Kindle could be an
improvement over existing studying techniques - such as using audio
books or scanning books page by page into a computer so
character-recognition software can translate it for a text-to-speech
program.
But activating the Kindle's audio feature probably requires a sighted
helper, because the step involves manipulating buttons and navigating
choices in menus that appear on the Kindle's screen.
The federation says the device should be able to speak the menu
choices as well.
Electronic books still make up a small portion of the overall book
market, but it's a fast-growing segment. In hopes of getting even
more people to try the Kindle, Amazon released the $489 Kindle DX
this year, which has a large screen and is geared toward textbook and
newspaper readers. The company then worked with several colleges to
give out Kindles this fall with digital versions of their textbooks
on them.
The Federation for the Blind sued one of the schools that
participated in this pilot program - Arizona State University - in
June, along with the American Council of the Blind and a blind ASU
student, arguing it was discriminating against blind students. That case
is ongoing.
The group also filed complaints with the Department of Justice
against five other schools that are participating in the Kindle trial
with Amazon.
Wisconsin and Syracuse are not among those schools.
Ken Frazier, director of Wisconsin-Madison's library system, said the
library bought 20 Kindle DX devices for use in a history class this fall.
Though he's not sure how many blind students are at his school, he
said many students have difficulties reading texts for various
reasons, such as learning disabilities.
"Our experience is that when you make technology accessible,
everybody benefits," he said.
