The AVG Rescue CD
AVG has just released a free rescue CD that can be used to recover your computer when the system cannot be loaded normally, such as after an extensive or deep-rooted virus infection.
The AVG Rescue CD enables you to fully remove infections from an otherwise inoperable PC and render the system bootable again.
This could also be handy for folks who recently were locked out of their PCs by a faulty update installed by BitDefender and Bullguard (which uses the same engine and signatures) which rendered many 64 bit machines useless.
The AVG Rescue CD aims to help people so affected to recover their system. Essentially, it is a portable version of AVG Anti-Virus embedded in a version of Linux so it doesn't need Windows to operate.
You can choose to download for use with either as a bootable CD or USB stick. Apart from the AV program the software also contains a variety of useful system tools for restarting a PC such as a file manager and registry editor.
The AVG Rescue CD is completely free of charge. There is a FAQ and free forum for the product, but only people with an AVG commercial license are entitled to receive technical support. The AVG Rescue CD is currently only available in English. More information and download links here:
http://www.avg.com/us-en/avg-rescue-cd#tba2
A user guide for AVG Rescue CD is available here :
http://www.avg.com/us-en/226386
The user guide contains steps to make the bootable CD, and also step by step guide to create a USB bootable device. Some steps are to be given proper attention while preparing the USB stick, as a wrong step in choosing the proper disk may render Windows unbootable. So, please read the steps carefully. The user guide also shows how to use the Rescue CD, along with screenshots. Users are advised to read the user guide carefully, before attempting to create CD/USB stick, and also before using the Rescue CD.
Video tutorials on using the AVG Rescue CD are also available on this page :

Copy a File’s Path to the Clipboard without any Registry Hacks!
Who knew it was so easy? Computing life just got a little easier.
Quickly Copy the Full Path of a File or Folder to the Windows Clipboard
If you ever wanted to copy the full path of any file or folder to the clipboard but without installing any third-party utilities or making any changes to your Windows registry, here’s a tip for you.
Copy File Path to Windows Clipboard
Copy the File’s Location to the Clipboard
Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the file or folder whose path you want to copy to the clipboard. Once you are there, hold the "Shift" key and right click that file or folder’s icon.
Because the Shift key is down, the contextual menu will have a new item that says "Copy as Path" – select that and the full location of the file or the folder will get saved to your clipboard from where you can paste it anywhere including the DOS window.
The keyboard equivalent is done by holding down shift and then press the application key.
The app key is three from the space bar's right edge also one key left of the right control key.
This key is the same as pressing the right mouse button.
The copy to path will still appear with the above keyboard action.
You can use this tip to copy a file’s location from all places including those appearing in the desktop search results.
This trick works in Windows Vista and Windows 7 but not XP. It was originally published in Ed Bott’s book.

Blue Screen Of Death Survival Guide: Every Error Explained
| Maximum PC
May 24 2010
Article source, MaximumPC
The link to a page with this article and more is at the end of today's tip.
Picture this: It’s late at night, you’re sitting at your computer playing a game or working on a project when, suddenly, Windows freezes completely. All your work is gone, and you find a blue screen full of gibberish staring back at you. Windows is dead, Jim, at least until you reboot it. You have no choice but to sigh loudly, shake your fist at Bill Gates and angrily push the reset button. You’ve just been visited by the ghost of windows crashed: the Blue Screen of Death.
Also known as the BSoD, the Blue Screen of Death appears when Windows crashes or locks up. It’s actually a Windows "stop" screen, and is designed to do two things:
tell you the reason for the error, and to calm your nerves, hence the use of the color blue (studies show it has a relaxing effect on people). Though Blue Screens are difficult to decipher, all the information you need to figure out what caused it is right there in front of you in blue and white—and that’s where we come in.
We’re going to show you how to dissect the blue screen error details, so you can fix the problem that’s causing them.
BSoD 101: A Crash Course.
Error Name
There are many parts to a BSOD, but the most important is right at the top. The actual name of the error is presented in all caps with an underscore between each word.
In some cases this will be all that’s needed to get to the root of the problem (thanks to the handy guide you are about to read). Most of the time, however, more information will be required.
Troubleshooting Advice
Nearly every BSOD includes a portion of text with some basic troubleshooting advice, the first of which recommends restarting your computer. Gee, thanks for the tip Microsoft.
Before you restart, copy the exact all-caps error code and hexadecimal values shown above and below this portion of generic text. The next paragraph provides sound advice, alerting the user to check to make sure their hardware is installed properly, or to undo any recent software or hardware upgrades.
Memory Dump
Every BSOD is accompanied by a memory dump. What this means is when Windows crashes, it dumps whatever it is holding in system memory to a file, and saves the file on your hard drive for debugging purposes. If you contact Microsoft for technical assistance, they’ll want to know the contents of this file.
Stop Code
The "technical information" section portion contains the actual Windows stop code, in oh-so-easy-to-read hexadecimal form. Despite appearing unintelligible at first glance, this combination of numbers and letters is instrumental in determining the cause of the crash. Pay particular attention to the first set of numbers and letters.
It precedes the other four, which are enclosed in parenthesis. If a specific driver is associated with the crash, it will be listed on the very next line.
I Run Vista, so I'm Immune to BSODs, Right?
Unfortunately, no. A common misconception is that blue screens don't even exist in Vista, but not only are they still there, but we're here to tell you we've seen them first hand. The good news is Microsoft put a lot of work into how Vista handles critical errors and other glitches that in previous OSes would cause a system crash. Most of the time, if a problem occurs, Vista will attempt to fix the problem without any interruption. For example, if your videocard crashes, you may see a message saying "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered." In XP and previous OSes, this almost always would have resulted in a system crash.
In some cases, Vista will be unable to recover on its own, and the result is a blue screen. By default, Vista will reboot itself after briefly flashing the blue screen.
It happens so fast you might miss it, but once Windows reloads, you'll be greeted with an error message similar to the above. You can try clicking the Check for solution button, just as you can try your hand playing the lotto. Neither one is likely to result in anything.
Instead, scroll down and take note of the blue screen codes. Armed with this information, you can perform your own detective work. Alternately, if you'd prefer to see the actual blue screen rather than automatically rebooting, right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop, select Properties, and click on Advanced System Settings. In the System Properties window that appears, select the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery, and uncheck the box that says Automatically Restart.
The same steps also apply to XP.
In another nod towards streamlining the troubleshooting process, Vista's Problem Reports and Solutions wizard can save you oodles of time in PC detective work, and may even alert you to potential conflicts you weren't even aware existed. You can find this applet by name in your Control Panel, or just type Problem Reports and Solutions in Vista's search box. Once loaded, click 'Check for new solutions' in the left-hand column. If Vista finds any conflicts, it will list them in the main window, along with any potential resolutions.

SoftKey Revealer
SoftKey Revealer is a Free Software for Personal Usage, not for Commercial Usage.
The first section is an article from the site where this program can be downloaded.
The second section includes step by step directions how to use the program as I go through running it on my laptop.
I.
Section One, About the SoftKey Revealer Program:
Retrieve the Software Installation Keys From Your PC
Updated Tue, 07/06/2010 - 18:43 by r.schifreen
You know how it is. You buy some software on CD, or online, and install it. The program works perfectly for ages. And then one day it doesn't. Or you change your PC.
Time for a reinstall of your applications. Except that you forgot to write down the installation key of that software, and the CD case (or confirmation email) has long since been lost. So you face the prospect of having to buy another licence for that can't-do-without application.
If that sounds familiar, here's a possible solution. A tiny, free utility for Windows (XP and above) that retrieves and displays the installation keys for loads of Windows apps.
The utility in question is called Softkey Revealer, and you can download it from:
http://sites.google.com/site/cakirbey/softkeyrevealer
No need to install anything - just unzip and run. And then copy those keys somewhere safe, before you forget!
II. Section Two:
Downloading and running the program.
1. Select the web address below and copy it to the clipboard by pressing control plus the letter c.
http://sites.google.com/site/cakirbey/softkeyrevealer
2. Open your internet browser and paste in the address above into the address bar.
From the keyboard, pressing control plus the letter o for open followed by control plus the letter v will do the trick.
Finally press enter to access the site.
3. Press the letter h once to reach the heading of "softkey revealer."
4. Arrow down 12 times and you should land on "SoftKey Revealer v2.2.4."
5. Press enter on this download link.
6. Press alt plus s to start the saving process.
7. Press alt plus the letter I and navigate to where you would like to save this zipped file.
8. Press alt plus the letter n and take note of the file's name for ease of location later.
9. Press alt plus s once more. The file will finish downloading in a few seconds. You should hear a short ding indicating the downloading is finished.
10. Press alt plus f4 to close the internet.
11. Move to where you placed this zipped file and highlight it.
12. Press the application key found three from right edge of your space bar. It is one key left of the right hand control key.
13. If you have winzip on your computer, arrow down to "winzip sub-menu" and press the right arrow once.
14. Arrow down three times to "extract to folder." You will hear the drive letter where your file is located and where this file will be unzipped.
You can use whatever unzip program you are comfortable with. Just remember where you unzipped the program. Usually it will be unzipped into a folder of the same name.
15. Press enter and in a few seconds the file is unzipped.
16. Arrow down once to the new "softKey revealer" folder placed just below your zipped version and press enter.
17. Arrow down once to "SoftKeyRevealer.exe" and press enter.
18. You are placed into a text document with the keys available on your computer.
First is given the program name and version.
Just below that information is the product key.
19. Below is the document provided on my computer with product codes deleted.
Just remember on yours, the product code will be where I have typed in a line of x's.

If you are in the market for a really nifty digital recorder, then here is an article for you.
We thank our friends at www.sterlingcreations.ca for passing this along to us.
Make it a great day!
Talk To The Wilson Digital Recorder
I have one of these and have baught several for visually impaired students/adults.
This little digital recorder is very popular with anyone who enjoys the simple things in life. It measures approximately 3x3 inches and fits in the palm of the hand. It has a belt clip on the back and uses two triple A batteries, not included in the price.
The cost is $19.99 with a $5 Shipping and Handling fee. The company is based in California and the website shows more products will be forthcoming. The Wilson Recorder can hold fifteen messages and each message can be as long as four minutes in length. It has no volume control, but the sound quality is very clear. There are only three buttons on the unit, which makes this digital recorder very easy to learn and use.
The button on the left is the record button. The button in the middle is the play/stop button. The button on the right is the delete button. A small blinking red light in the upper right hand corner of the recorder will indicate that the unit is in the record mode. This recorder provides users with a quick and easy way of capturing information "on the fly" when they are visiting their doctor or given a phone number and don't have an effective way of getting the information into an accessible format.

Greetings everyone! I'm Jayna Sheffield, your Café friend and it's that time for me to introduce you to our favorite editor and blogger Donna J. Jodhan.
Today, Donna has a personal touch for you; all about going shopping with her mom as a blind person.
Enjoy and have a great day.
Going shopping with mom
Going shopping with mom is always a very special occasion for me. You see, she is not just mom; she is my shopping buddy, my eyes, and my best friend. She knows exactly how to interact with me and how to make my shopping trip a joy rather than a chore. For I can tell you this! Going shopping with a blind person can either turn out to be a nightmare or on the other hand it can turn out to be a joy! It all depends on who is taking you shopping.
For those who have little or no experience with taking a blind person shopping, here is how mom does it. I take her arm and she gently but firmly guides me through mall; describing things as we walk. She describes the people passing by, tells me the names of stores, and if I am interested in any of them as we walk by, we stroll inside for a visit. If it is a clothing store, mom and I visit each rack and she tells me what is on each rack. If it is a shoe store, we do the same and if it is a supermarket then the fun really starts.
In stores, mom takes her time to describe the merchandise in detail. She tells me the colors of things, describes the shapes of clothing and shoes, and if I am interested in something then she takes the object of interest off the rack and then we go to the fitting room to try on. Mom then gives me her opinion of how it looks on me; whether or not the color suits me or if it fits me well. I trust her totally to tell me how things look. It helps a lot that I was able to see before so as she describes things I picture them in my mind.
Shopping in stores is a two way street because in turn, when mom chooses things, she allows me to use my sense of touch to help her decide if something would be what she may or may not like. I am unable to help her with colors of course, but I can tell if clothing fits her by touching her shoulders if it is a sweater, blouse, or jacket, and feeling the length of skirts and coats. If it is a pair of shoes that she is trying on, then she allows me to use my fingers to make sure that her toes are not too close to the tips of the shoes. For handbags and purses, she places them in my hands and I can feel the shape and give my opinion.
Shopping in the supermarket is not much different for mom and me. She describes what's on the shelves, tells me the prices, and places produce and packaged meat in my hands so that I can get an idea of what she is describing. We always have fun doing this because we both love shopping at the supermarket.
So there you have it; shopping with mom and me. Shopping in a different way but getting the job done in style. If you would like to learn more about how to shop with a blind person, then visit www.nfb.org.

Putting Out The Pepper Fire:
There are several remedies for the effects of eating a pepper that is too hot for you, something that is usually discovered when it is too late. Often people build up tolerance to the heat of peppers over time, and will be able to eat hotter and hotter chilies. Many people recommend drinking tomato juice or eating a fresh lemon or lime, the theory being that the acid counteracts the alkalinity of the capsaicin. Some people won't begin eating hot peppers without a pitcher of cold water handy, though this is not the best idea. The capsaicin, which is an oil, does not mix with the water but is instead distributed to more parts of the mouth.
More useful solutions include drinking milk, rinsing the mouth with it as you sip, or eating rice or bread, which absorb the capsaicin.

Eating Fruit
We all think eating fruits means just buying fruits, cutting it and just popping it into our mouths. It's not as easy as you think. It's important to know how and when to eat.
What is the correct way of eating fruits?
It means not eating fruits after your meals!
* Fruits should be
eaten on an empty stomach.
If you eat fruit like that, it will play a major role to detoxify your system, supplying you with a great deal of energy for weight loss and other life activities.
Fruit is the most important food. Let's say you eat two slices of bread and then a slice of fruit. The slice of fruit is ready to go straight through the stomach into the intestines, but it is prevented from doing so.
In the meantime, the whole meal rots and ferments and turns to acid.
The minute the fruit comes into contact with the food in the stomach and digestive juices, the entire mass of food begins to spoil....
So please eat your fruits on an empty stomach or before your meals!
You have heard people complaining "every time I eat watermelon I burp, when I eat durian my stomach bloats up, when I eat a banana I feel like running to the toilet, etc." Actually all this will not arise if you eat the fruit on an empty stomach. The fruit mixes with the putrefying other food and produces gas and hence you will bloat!
Graying hair, balding, nervous outburst, and dark circles under the eyes, all these will NOT happen if you take fruits on an empty stomach.
There is no such thing as some fruits, like orange and lemon are acidic, because all fruits become alkaline in our body, according to Dr. Herbert Shelton who did research on this matter. If you have mastered the correct way of eating fruits, you have the Secret of beauty, longevity, health, energy, happiness and normal weight.
When you need to drink fruit juice, drink only fresh fruit juice, not from the cans. Don't even drink juice that has been heated up.
Don't eat cooked fruits because you don't get the nutrients at all.
You only get to taste. Cooking destroys all the vitamins.
But eating a whole fruit is better than drinking the juice. If you should drink the juice, drink it mouthful by mouthful slowly, because you must let it mix with your saliva before swallowing it.
You can go on a 3-day fruit fast to cleanse your body. Just eat fruits and drink fruit juice throughout the 3 days and you will be surprised when your friends tell you how radiant you look!
Kiwi:
Tiny but mighty. This is a good source of potassium, magnesium, vitamin E and fiber. Its vitamin C content is twice that of an orange.
Apple:
An apple a day keeps the doctor away? Although an apple has a low vitamin C content, it has antioxidants and flavonoids which enhances the activity of vitamin C thereby helping to lower the risks of colon cancer, heart attack and stroke.
Strawberry:
Protective Fruit. Strawberries have the highest total antioxidant power among major fruits and protect the body from cancer-causing, blood vessel-clogging free radicals.
Orange:
Sweetest medicine. Eating 2 to 4 oranges a day may help keep colds away, lower cholesterol, prevent and dissolve kidney stones
Sweetest medicine. Eating 2 to 4 oranges a day may help keep colds away, lower cholesterol, prevent and dissolve kidney stones as well as lessens the risk of colon cancer.
Watermelon:
Coolest thirst quencher. Composed of 92 percent water, it is also packed with a giant dose of glutathione, which helps boost our immune system. They are also a key source of lycopene, the cancer fighting oxidant. Other nutrients found in watermelon are vitamin C and Potassium.
Guava and Papaya:
Top awards for vitamin C.. They are the clear winners for their high vitamin C content.. Guava is also rich in fiber, which helps prevent constipation. Papaya is rich in carotene; this is good for your eyes.

How To Make Fries Crisp And Crunchy
The secret to crisp and crunchy fries is in the heat.
This recipe is for pan fries, which are tasty and better for you than deep-fried ones.
1. Chop potatoes into wedges
2. Boil in salted water for about 10 to 12 minutes.
3. Drain water from the potatoes.
4. Place on a shallow baking tray with lots of olive oil, don't use extra virgin, it will smoke. Toss them around in the oil until completely coated. Canola oil also works.
5. Put it in the oven at 425 to 450 degrees.
6. Periodically toss them around as they bake, scoop and flip with the implement of your choice.
7. The minute they are almost done, jack the temperature up to 500 degrees, seriously, and cook for just a few more minutes. Watch carefully! This gives them extra crispiness.
Tip:
Use Yukon Gold potatoes for the best results.
Deep frying takes considerably more time, skill, and effort to make a good, crispy fry at home. So take your fries, even frozen ones, and put them in a VERY hot oven, 500 degrees, for just a few minutes before you serve them to get that almost glass-like crispiness. This technique works well with all kinds of fried and even roasted foods.
Warnings
When you open the oven door to scoop and flip, if you wear glasses, be aware that they will fog up.

Refrigerator Makeover
The 8 best tips for organizing your refrigerator
In these days when you’re trying to cut costs, lose weight and be healthy, one easy place to start is by organizing your refrigerator. True! Most Americans waste a lot of money each year on food that’s spoiled or past its expiration date.
It’s something you can remedy, as long as you know the best ways to store your fruit, yogurt, protein and dairy items. Once you get your refrigerator cleaned out [see sidebar], here are the eight best refrigerator organizing tips.
1. Don’t overload. Refrigerators work best when they’re about three-quarters full.
When you cram your refrigerator full of bottles, jars and bags, it uses more energy and works less efficiently.
2. Be smart about storage. Storing food properly is probably the single best thing you can do to keep your food organized and fresh. Use clear containers, so you’re able to see the contents of each one. If you’ve got leftover veggies or fruit, a masking tape label with the date will help you keep track of everything, so you know when to save a dish and when to toss it.
3. Group similar items. If some of your yogurt is on the second shelf and more is behind the celery on the bottom shelf, it can be hard to keep track.
Instead, get a clear, plastic container and put all your yogurt in it. You can have a similar container for milk, creamers and whipped toppings. Doing this will save you time and cut down on waste.
4. Store efficiently. The door of the refrigerator varies the most in temperature, because it’s constantly being opened and closed. Items like condiments, that don’t need consistent cold will fare better in the door. Put milk and dairy items in the top; store veggies in the crisper drawers (it will keep fruit and vegetables fresher longer); meat works best in a separate compartment, lined with paper towels or shelf paper (many refrigerators have a specific meat drawer).
5. Shelve logically. You don’t want to have to reach behind a quart of skim milk to get the small container of coffee creamer. Instead, put tall items toward the back of the shelves and the shorter items in front. Everything will be more visible and reachable.
6. Know when to store. One way to increase space in the refrigerator is to make sure you’re only storing items that need to be kept cold. In general, certain produce, like whole onions, tomatoes and bananas get stored at room temperature.
The same is true for unopened oils and vinegars. Often, food that needs to be refrigerated is marked on the can or bottle. If you have any questions about a specific item, check with someone in your favorite market or search online for help.
7. Be aware of shelf life. Everything that’s refrigerated is perishable, and knowing approximately how long items last can help you stay better organized.
For instance, hard cheese is at its peak of freshness for about a week. Eggs can keep for several weeks, and meat should be eaten as soon as possible or stored in the freezer. Many items are marked with expiration dates; just be aware those dates are for unopened items. Once a container or bottle has been opened, it becomes much more vulnerable.
8. Keep up with the contents. There’s nothing more frustrating than having two or three of an item. One way to prevent this is to do a quick inventory of your refrigerator contents each week, before you make your grocery list.

Freezing Onions
There are three ways you can freeze your onions. Freezing does change the onions texture so use only for cooking.
1. Chop and place onions on a cookie sheet in the freezer.
When frozen, remove and place in freezer containers or bags, and seal. This allows you to remove the amount you want, when you want.
2. You can also freeze whole onions. Peel, wash, core and place onions in a plastic bag and freeze.
3 You may also slice your onions and saute them in a little butter, cool and then freeze in freezer bags.

How To Make GOOD Scrambled Eggs
Anyone who likes eggs for breakfast can appreciate these tips:
Break eggs into a bowl; allow 2 eggs per person. Whisk eggs with salt and pepper to taste. In a heavy skillet over medium heat, melt 1 to 2 tablespoons of butter. When the butter stops foaming, reduce heat to medium-low. Add the eggs to the hot pan. After a minute or 2, when the bottom and edges have begun to cook and solidify, scrape and lift the edges with a spatula and allow the uncooked part to run under the part lifted. Fold cooked parts towards the center. Repeat the scraping, lifting, and folding until the egg has formed curds. More stirring will make small curds and less will make larger, fluffier curds. When the curds are firm but still moist, remove to plates or serving dish. They will continue cooking after they leave the pan.
Tips:
For lighter eggs, add about a tablespoon of milk, water, or cream for each egg.
For extra flavor and texture, add minced vegetables and/or ham to the butter and saute for a few minutes before adding the eggs.

How To Cool Burns From Chili Peppers
Chili peppers, such as jalepeño, cayenne, and habanero peppers, contain capsaicin, which is the main ingredient in pepper spray. Capsaicin can add flavor and spiciness to food, but can also cause an extreme burning sensation which can last for minutes or even hours. Capsaicin is a natural oil found in all chilies, what we have come to call peppers. If your mouth is burning up, here's how to cool off. These tips will likely work on your skin, too!
Drink milk.
There's a protein found in milk called casein that acts like a detergent against capsaicin.
It'll actually pull the capsaicin compounds away from the nerve receptor binding sites in your mouth. Drink at least a half cup, making sure you rinse your mouth well first.
You can spit it out, but you won't get as much relief in your throat that way.
The colder the milk is, the more effective it tends to be against the burning sensation.
If you don't have any milk, you may be able to coat the inside of your mouth to soothe it with cottage cheese, cold plain yogurt, sour cream or ice cream, which should also contain the milk protein called casein.
Drink sugar water.
Mix a tablespoon or more of sugar with a cup of water and use it to rinse out your mouth. Cold sugar solution (10 percent) at 68 degrees is about as effective as whole milk at 41 degrees
but the relief only lasts while the mixture is still in your mouth so you'll need to keep rinsing and spitting until the pain
subsides.
Drink alcohol.
Capsaicin is soluble in alcohol, so drinking a beer or a shot can help wash it away. It's not nearly as effective, however, as milk.
Alcohol is a solvent to capsaicin, not a neutralizer, so it will break it loose, but it may just spread it around.
Rinse your mouth with oil.
Capsaicin is also soluble in vegetable oils so swishing some around in your mouth might help. Keep in mind that oil has been
found to be only slightly more effective than water in relieving pepper burns, so use it only if nothing else is available.
Unverified Folk Remedies
Try any of the following folk remedies, but keep in mind that these methods have not been verified in a reliable third party source.
Eat some cucumber. This is, in fact, a common way to deal with too much heat in the food in Indonesia and Thailand.
Touch the affected area with a soft corn tortilla (lips, mouth, etc.)
Curries and other hot dishes are almost always accompanied by copious amounts of rice in India, because starchy foods combat the burning sensation. Potato will work as well, as will bread. Chew well, so that the tongue is "washed" by the rice, potato or bread.
Use salt. Salting the food or eating salty chips can soothe the burn.
Try honey. Sopapillas with honey are served with spicy foods in some restaurants.
Pepto Bismol® may stop the burn.
Try eating a raw carrot. There's no trick to swishing it around. Just take a bite and the burn will significantly diminish.
White toothpaste can significantly reduce the burning from habanero oils on the skin. It will likely work in the mouth and/or with other peppers.
Coconut milk works very well to cut the burn and modulate the heat level of a spicy recipe.
Ice Cream for the same reasons as cold milk, and it has sugar.
Eat a banana. The texture and sugar content may help soothe the burn.
Eat some chocolate. The capsaicin in peppers is more soluble in fat than aqueous based solutions, ie beer, water, even low-fat
milk. The high fat content of most chocolate bars will help to remove some of the capsaicin from your mouth. Milk chocolate generally has a higher fat content and a higher casein content than dark chocolate and therefore should give better relief.
Eat an apple.
Tips
The burning sensation will fade away on its own over time.
Drinking plain water may not alleviate much of the pain and can even tend to just spread the heat throughout your mouth by carrying the pepper everywhere.
If you include ingredients that have lots of natural sugars, grated carrots, sautéed onions, etc.) in a dish with hot peppers, the sugars tend to "bank" the hotness, it's still there, but it's not the first thing you taste and doesn't overwhelm the rest of the flavors.
To avoid burning sensation on your hands while preparing food with peppers, rub and cover your hands with vegetable oil or wear latex or vinyl gloves.
Warnings
Avoid getting peppers in your nose, eyes, or any other openings, which is a very painful experience. Pepper spray is made from chili peppers, so if you have happened to have been sprayed in the past, you know what this feels like.
Avoid getting peppers on open cuts.
Be careful handling contact lenses after handling spicy peppers. Capsaicin is difficult to fully remove and does not completely wash away with soap and water. If you wear contacts, it is best to use gloves while handling peppers.
Do not try to cool burns if you're about to eat something spicy. The burn and then cooling and then re-stimulation will hurt more.

Empty Pill Bottles?
Hate to throw empty pill bottles away, but don't like the clutter they create? Here are some uses for pill bottles beyond wasting space and gathering dust.
1. Before you reuse your pill bottle, peel off the label. Soak the bottle in water or use Goo Gone to remove the rest of the sticker and any remaining residue. Rinse and dry the pill bottles before using them.
2. Fill empty pill bottles with loose change, such as quarters for parking or laundry.
3. Store items that never seem to have a place, such as: thumb tacks, paper clips, small nails, and picture hangers.
4. Store repair supplies such as nails, screws, nuts and bolts. Large pill bottles can be used for even bigger items.
5. Organize your fishing supplies: hooks, lures, bobbers, any small loose fishing items. They may also make an acceptable bobber by painting them in bright colors or adding reflective tape to them.
6. Always losing Barbie's high heels? Store smaller doll items like shoes and accessories in a pill bottle so they don't get lost.
7. Want to store your craft supplies without having a mess of beads rolling around?
Store items like glitter, sequins, beads and googly eyes in pill bottles as well.
8. Use larger pill bottles in home made first aid kits and travel kits.
9. Make shakers by filling pill bottles with beans or other items.
10. Donate clean, label-free, pill bottles to your veterinary office or local humane society. Containers used for dispensing medication to animals is not as strictly controlled as for humans (and yes, most veterinary practices have begun using blue prescription bottles, but are not strictly required to do so. Most will also accept expired antibiotics and other expired prescriptions).
11. Fill them with colorful craft sand and display them or make a mobile.
12. Use as spice jars, depending on what they originally contained, and how well they can be cleaned out (in other words, if you can be certain there is no risk of poisoning).
13. Remove labels and wash well. Donate them to your local school band. They use them to soak woodwind reeds and clean small instrument parts.
Tips
· Use a piece of scotch tape to label the contents of each bottle in print or label tape for braille.
· Contact lens containers make great travel bottles. Simply wash out thoroughly and leave to dry. The small round ones are great for dollops of toothpaste, hand cream, lotion, face cream etc. The larger squeeze bottles are perfect for shampoo etc.
· Do not re-purpose pill bottles as toys for young children.
Warnings
· Use caution in storing edibles in pill bottles, only do this if the original contents were very benign (food supplements or vitamins, for example) or the bottles are cleaned very thoroughly.

12 to 16 ounces water
1/2 cup white or apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup rubbing alcohol
1-2 drops lavender, cinnamon, clove or orange essential oil, if desired
Combine ingredients in a labeled spray bottle.
Cleaning Hints:
* Use newspapers rather than paper towels. They don't leave lint and streak less.
* Spray the newspaper first, then wipe down the window to avoid drips.
* Wipe vertically one side of the window and horizontally on the other side so you will know which side a streak is on.

Storing Those Sweet Onions
Sweet onions have a shorter shelf life than common varieties due to a higher water and sugar content.
Thus, it's important to store them properly.
Ideally, sweet onions should be stored in a cool, dark, dry location and spread out for optimum air circulation.
Most growers suggest placing onions in a clean pair of pantyhose, with knots tied in between each onion, then hung in a cool, dry place. Just snip off below each knot when you need one.
Stored properly, sweet onions should last in your pantry about ten days to two weeks.
Cut, raw onion leftovers should be tightly wrapped and refrigerated to be used within a few days.
Although sweet onions are best eaten raw, they can be chopped and frozen for future cooking uses, with no blanching necessary. Frozen onions begin to lose their flavor after about twelve months in the freezer.

Protect Flower Bulbs From Mold
To ensure healthy bulbs, try this:
Cut a leg off a pair of old pantyhose and place one bulb inside.Tie a knot above the bulb before adding the next one. Continue until you run out of fabric, then tie the opening in a knot and hang in a cool, dry place. The breathable material provides continuous circulation of air, preventing the formation of mold or rot...

Road Trip Tips For Kids
Most parents noticeably wince when making preparations for a long road trip, and for good reasons. They are anticipating the age-old questions and declarations of, "Are we there yet?" "How much longer?" "Mom, Bobby's touching me!" or "I gotta go potty - NOW!"
While I can't promise that your testy travelers will turn into angelic adventurers, I can offer some helpful tips to cut back on stress, yours and theirs:·
To offer more leg and elbow room, as well as eliminate cries of someone being squished, strategically pack suitcases and boxes, and other things that will not be needed during the trip, in the vehicle's trunk, cargo area, or on the roof top. This would include hang-up clothes - make it a point not to have any. Wrinkles are a lot easier to deal with than temperamental munchkins. Besides, the clothes would probably be more wrinkled with the kids crawling on them.·
Give each child a plastic box with a lid to store their books, games, toys, etc. and to help keep the vehicle from getting cluttered. Plus, the lid can be used as a desktop and/or to hold food.·
Wrap up small, inexpensive toys, books or games from the dollar store that can be handed out during restless times or as good behavior rewards during the trip. The kids will look forward to these treats, and will enjoy the added bonus of unwrapping
their surprises.·
Bring along plastic grocery or trash bags that can be used to store dirty laundry, wet clothes or trash. Also, keep a supply of wet wipes available to clean fingers, faces and accidents, which can then be tossed in the plastic bag for disposal.·
Have plenty of snacks and bottled water on hand. These will help with the grouchies, boredom attacks and cut down on food stops. And when you do have a food, gas or rest stop, bring out a Frisbee or ball to play with for some quick exercise.·
As you know, many vehicles are equipped these days with a VCR or DVD player, but do not fret if yours doesn't. Bring along audio cassette stories like the Rescuers Down Under, Dr. Doolittle, etc. These can be played in the car's tape deck for everyone's enjoyment, or individually in a walkman player. Audio cassette tapes can be checked out through your local library, purchased in a bookstore, or rented at a Cracker Barrel store.·
Here's a fun way to teach your children the state capitols: When you're on the road,
have someone point out state license plates. The person that sees it will say the state's name and tap another person to name the capitol of that state. If the person tapped doesn't know, he/she will then tap someone else to name the capitol.·
Play the "I Spy" game. First, pick out an object that everyone can see. Then give them a clue by saying, "I spy something..." (say its shape, color or size). The other players can ask questions about what you see, but you can only answer with "yes" or "no." The first player who guesses what you see, becomes the new spy.·
Little ones who know their colors and numbers can participate in another game where players choose a color such as red, blue, or green and count how many cars of that color they see until they reach their destination. The person who counted the most cars wins that round.·
If you or your child require special medication and/or treatment, take along a letter from your doctor that lists all your medications, dosages, and when to take them, as well as your treatment plan. And, as an added precaution, be sure to have a small first-aid kit in the car.
Finally, have fun and drive safely!

Protect Young Plants From Slugs
To keep harmful slugs away from newly planted seedlings, place pennies around the perimeter of the plant before covering with dirt. The copper blockade will give the critters a tiny electric shock (caused by the exchange of electrons between the slimy slugs and the metal) the minute they come into contact with the coins. The end result: beautiful bug free blooms.

Crockpot Cooking Tips
* liquids don't boil away as in conventional cooking.
Usually you'll have more liquid at the end of cooking instead of less. So always cook with the cover on... except to "brown off" the liquids after cooking.
* Recipes that will not adapt well are those that require broiling or deep frying. If you feel unsure about a step, go ahead and follow the recipe's directions as written.
* Most uncooked meat and vegetable combinations will require at least 8 hours on low. Many recipes say "bring to a boil, then turn down to simmer." In a crock pot this is not necessary. Simply set the crock pot to low and forget it. Crock pot cooks so gently... so an extra hour on low need not worry you. Any recipe can be cooked on high the first two hours to reduce cooking time, and then turned to low.

Helpful Picnic Tips
Use two small coolers, one for fruit and beverages, which will be opened frequently, and one for such perishables as meats, poultry, salads, sandwiches, and cheese.
Chill food thoroughly in the refrigerator or freezer before placing in cooler, the cooler cannot chill foods that aren't already cold.
Use store-bought ice packs, or make your own: Freeze juice boxes, or fill milk cartons or plastic bottles with water (leave 1-inch headroom at top to prevent bursting; fold carton over to close, or place cap on bottle before freezing). Pack perishables right next to ice packs. Keep fruits and delicate veggies like lettuce away from ice to prevent bruising and "freezer burn."
Fill cooler to the top (if necessary, add ice cubes or other cold nonperishables to fill space), a full cooler keeps food cold longer than a partially filled one.

Repair Split Ends
Add a few drops of lavender oil to a tablespoon of warm (not boiling) castor or sweet oil. Apply just to the ends of your hair. Then wrap hair with plastic wrap or a plastic shower cap and cover with a warm towel. Leave on for at least 30 minutes and then shampoo twice using cool water.

Create The Perfect Summer Ice Pack
Instead of putting ice (which quickly melts in the hot summer months) on a bang or bruise, use a sock filled with pennies to soothe. Simply drop a generous amount of the coins into an old tube sock, tie it shut and place in the freezer. It will feel like an ice pack and do the same job, without the drippy, wet mess.

Uncorking A Wine Bottle
If you've been yanking on a cork in a wine bottle and it
just simply won't budge, here's a quick tip:
Take a hot, wet towel and wrap it around the neck of the bottle. The heat will cause the glass to expand a little so the cork will pop right out.

Genius Way To Whiten Tile Grout

Double The Life Of Mixed Bouquets
Toss a penny into the vase after filling it with water, then place the cut flowers in the vase. The copper coin is a natural algaecide, so it will oxidize in the water. Hello there! I'm Matt Chadwick, your friendly Café friend and it's a new week and a gorgeous one shaping up.
Today, I have a very interesting article to share with you; one that focuses on technology that opens up doors for Blind persons.
I hope you find it interesting and I thank our friends at http://www.sterlingcreations.ca for passing this along to us.
Make it a great day.
Apple's iPad Brings Easy Reading to the Blind
Benjamin Clymer
April 12, 2010
Benjamin Clymer is a freelance writer and founder of HODINKEE.com.
Ask any PC-loving computer nerd why Apple products have become the de facto
choice of the masses, and you'll likely hear something like, "People buy
Apple products because they're pretty." That may be true for many, but one
group of consumers who care little for Apple's prodigious aesthetics are the
blind.
They care more about how Apple products actually work. And while the iPad
may be Apple's most controversial launch in recent memory, the blind
community is unanimous in its support. The National Federation of the Blind
(NFB) even released a statement last January praising the device.
What are they so excited about?
First, consider what an e-reader represents to the blind community. The
concept of an affordable, portable device that allows the visually impaired
to consume media easily and without special consideration is an exciting
proposition, but one never fully realized. In fact, Amazon's Kindle, which
until the iPad's release was the most acclaimed and full-featured e-reader,
had high potential for capturing the hearts of the 314 million visually
impaired persons around the world. Instead, Amazon failed to fully consider
what would be required for a blind person to successfully navigate the
Kindle's menus without assistance. While magazines, books and newspapers had
full voice integration, allowing easy listening of all text, Amazon provided
no way to enter a publication from the Kindle's home screen. What good is a
reader to someone who is blind if it requires a seeing person to get to the
first page, let alone turn that page?
Both the NFB and the American Council of the Blind have lambasted the
Kindle, filing a lawsuit against Arizona State University, which had been
part of Kindle's pilot program to replace textbooks with the e-reader, and
sending a formal complaint to the Justice Department insisting all Kindles
be removed from five other universities testing the Kindle with their
student body. Two other universities, Syracuse University and the University
of Wisconsin at Madison, had previously told Amazon they would not order any
Kindles until the text menus were fully accessible to the blind. Amazon has
since released a statement saying the Kindle will be blind-friendly by this
summer. It's too little, too late.
In stark contrast, all iPads have a standard application called VoiceOver,
which allows for audible control of every single menu, even those included
in third party applications. NFB has commended Apple for producing a device
that is usable right out of the box for both seeing and the visually
impaired alike. The NFB statement even mentions that the touch-screen "need
not be a barrier" to the blind.
Computer nerds, tech columnists and the general public may not know where
the iPad fits into the existing media consumption landscape--but the blind
and visually impaired see it as the only e-reader worth owning. Call it
further proof that Apple is more than just a pretty face.

Greetings everyone! I'm Jayna Sheffield, your friendly Café friend. It's great to be back and it's that time of the week for me to reintroduce our favourite editor, blogger, friend, and advocate; Donna J. Jodhan. Today, Donna has a very insightful article to share with us.
We hope you enjoy reading it.
Make it a great day.
Can blind people play chess?
The playing of chess has become a favorite passion and pastime of many blind persons around the world and for me it has helped me to deal with my loss of vision. Three years ago, I started to learn how to play chess and quickly realized that if I really wanted to learn the game properly, I would have to be taught by those who really knew how to teach blind persons.
When I first started, I was fortunate enough to receive coaching from a wonderful Russian teacher who had taught chess to blind persons in her native Russia but when I tried to join various mainstream clubs in my area and to have mainstream teachers teach me, it turned into experiences of great frustration and disappointment. Then I learned about the Hadley school for the blind; an institution that offers courses at no charge to Americans and Canadians.
The courses range from high school courses in Math, history, geography, law, and foreign languages, to so many other types of courses including chess. I took the chess course and today I am delighted to report that I am playing against other blind players around the world. I am making friends all the time and recently came across a young man who lost his sight due to an injury that he sustained while in the US army. I am presently engaged in a tournament that puts a North American team against a team from South Africa.
So how do I play chess? With a board that consists of squares that are raised and sunken to represent the difference between black and white squares. The white chess pieces have been made distinguishable from the black pieces through extra dots on their tops. Chess sets are readily available for purchase but if you would like to learn more about how blind and visually impaired persons go about playing chess then please visit www.hadley.edu.
I'm Donna J. Jodhan your friendly accessibility advocate wishing you a terrific day and inviting you to go out there and tell others that yes! Blind and visually impaired persons can and do play chess and they can even play against sighted players.

Searching For A Lost File On Your Computer
1. Press the start button also called the "windows key."

C:
3. Tab three times to reach "all files and folders."
4. Press enter on this edit field.
You can type in a common file extention or type in all or part of a file name.
5. If you don't remember the name of your file but know the program used, typing that program's file extention will get lots of results.
Below is a list of common file extentions.
If one of these is one you used, type that extention in the search field starting with an asterisk made by pressing shift plus number eight on the numeric row above the letter keys. Your screenreader will probably say the word "star" when typing an asterisk.
The extentions shown below will have a asterisk before them if you want to just copy/paste it into your search field.
*Doc for Word 2003 files
*docx for word 2007
*mp3 for some audio files
*wav for a wav audio file.
*jpeg for some video files

7. In a few seconds a new screen with all the files found is shown. A prompt says, "yes, finished searching button."
Just tab around to the list of files and check them out.
You could press shift tab three times to reach the list if any.
8. If the lost file is not found, tab to "change fle name or key words button" and press the spacebar.
9. Type in a new extention or file name and press enter.
The search starts all over again.
10. When you are finished, just press alt plus f4.

Create A Simple Web Page From Email And Share It Within Seconds
Posterous is almost certainly the quickest way to create a web page and get it online. Post a simple text message, or include additional content such as an MP3 file or a picture. Unlike traditional blogging and publishing services, such as Blogger or FaceBook, you don't even need to sign up for an account.
Think of something to say, then email it to:
www.post@posterous.com
Within a few seconds, you'll receive a reply telling you the address of your published page. Click on the link, and it's there for you (and the world) to see, It really is that easy. Web publishing doesn't get easier, or quicker, than this. If you want to show your holiday photos to family or colleagues, or publish the agenda for your next club meeting, this is the simplest way to do it. Initially your published page will be given a unique URL, albeit not a particularly friendly or memorable one. It can be changed, just view the page and click on the button to claim the account. You can then change the name (the bit before posterous.com) to anything you like, so long as it isn't taken already. And of course you can assign a password to the account too, so no one else can continue contributing to it.
Posterous is clearly no substitute for a full-featured web publishing system like Drupal, Joomla or WordPress. But nothing compares to it for speed. In the time it takes to send an email, you could publish your message as a web page instead. There are plenty of free places that you can publish content on the web. Blogger, WordPress.com, MySpace, Facebook, and plenty more.
But for sheer simplicity, Posterous is definitely worth a look.

BC Scan
BC Scan is a new online access to bar code information from all around the world.
As you will read below, users can add to the database and it is updated for everyone.
Included are links to the site and "contact us."
http://www.bcscan.com/
BCScan: Introduction
BCScan is a new way to organize your life. By using bar codes found on practically anything you buy, you can identify products, share product directions and information, and inventory items in your house.
How it Works
The main page on BCScan includes a box for you to scan items. Using a bar code scanner, place your cursor in the box and scan the item. With most scanners, you will hear a beep, and the page with the item information will be displayed.
Additional Features
You can create a free account to use some advanced features. First, instead of just scanning items, you can add them to a personal list which you can view later. We track the number of times you scan each item. Go to the "View my Inventory" link to see your complete list and make changes. You can also submit updates to the database for items that we don't have listed.
More to Come
Please check back often, as we will be adding more features in the coming months.
Bar codes are a powerful tool, and we welcome you to the world of BCScan.
*Contact Us:
Use the link below to complete a form for contacting company customer service and more.

About BCScan
BCScan is a free service that allows you to organize, catalog, learn about, and manage your groceries, CDs, movies, household products, medications, or just about anything else. It works using a bar code scanner and a database of roughly a million products.
When a bar code on an item is scanned, BCScan will check a database for the product and tell you what it is. You can add products to your personal inventory, add notes, or contribute additional information. It's great for the visually impaired person who needs to identify a canned good or for anyone who wants to better organize their life.
Things you could do with BCScan:
Inventory your groceries, CDs, movies, or just about anything else. Great for your records or insurance protection.
Identify products and learn more about them.
Share and retrieve ingredients and product directions.

Enhanced i-Phone Screen Protector
Powered by Odiogo.com
Do you find your fingers dancing around the touch screen of your i-Phone? Have you ever wondered how to make touch screen navigation a little easier on your Apple device?
Solona is proud to introduce a screen protector that transforms your iPhone touch screen into a tactile keyboard.
Whether you prefer landscape mode or portrait mode, the Solona Enhanced Screen Protector will function properly and provide you with a tactile map of the keyboard.
Each screen protector is carefully embossed with the tactile effect so that your touch screen navigation is fast and accurate.
Here’s how it works.
Each letter key is elevated with one distinct dot. Each function key is elevated with two distinct dots. That way, you can easily distinguish between letters and function keys. This slight enhancement provides your iPhone with an additional layer of accessibility.
If you are interested in receiving an Enhanced Screen Protector, you may elect to send your own for us to process. We will enhance them free of charge and return them to you via USPS. The other option is to purchase a set of two Tactile Screen Protectors directly from Solona.
For a fixed price, Solona will provide you with two Power Support brand Crystal Screen Protectors for your iPhone that have been enhanced with the tactile keyboard effect.
iPhones are magnificent devices. Apple is to be commended for incorporating native accessibility into both families of products.
Most people use screen protectors in an effort to reduce the threat of screen damage and to extend the life and accuracy of the touch screen functionality. If you are already using screen protectors, then you understand how they work. Imagine your current screen protector, yet with elevated dots strategically positioned on each key to provide you with a roadmap of your iPhone keyboard.
If you have never used a screen protector for your iPhone, I recommend that you do some independent research. Discover how
other people use them. Read about how to install them. Get an idea for how they help extend the life of your iPhone touch screen.
If you would like to enhance your iPhone touch screen with an Enhanced Screen Protector by Solona, please visit the Solona Screen Protector Page at:

Dan's Tech Tips:
How To Pin Items To The Start Menu
Pinned items are shortcuts which appear on the left pane of the Start Menu until they are manually removed. You can pin shortcuts found anywhere on your Desktop, Start Menu or Taskbar and any executable file of any application.
To pin a shortcut, right click on it and then select Pin to Start Menu. Alternatively, you can drag and drop a shortcut to the Start Menu or on its orb.
In case you don't see the Pin to Start Menu option when you right-click on a file, hold down the SHIFT key and right-click again.
For example, the Pin to Start Menu option appears in the right-click menu only for applications, files with the .exe extension. If you want to pin to the Start Menu a text file, you will have to use the SHIFT key and right click.
To remove a pinned item, simply right click on it and select Unpin from Start Menu or Remove from this list.
How To Pin Or Remove Items From Jump Lists
As mentioned earlier, applications with support for Jump Lists will show a small arrow on the right of their Start Menu shortcut which gives you access to recently used files and tasks available for that application. The recently used files list is continuously updated as you work with the application while the tasks list remains the same. If you want to, you can pin a recently used file so that it always shows up for that application.
Let's take Internet Explorer, for example: if you have used it to browse a few web pages, you will see the most frequent web pages and the standard list of tasks.
Move your mouse on any of the frequently visited web pages and you will see on its right side a small pin. Click on it to pin that page to the Jump List.
If using a screenreader, you can tab or arrow down to see the visited webpages.
Alternatively, you can right click on the page that you want to pin and select the Pin to this list option.
To unpin an item, click again on the pin icon or right click on it and select the Unpin from this list of
options. Of course pressing the application gbutton found three keys from the spacebar's right edge.
This is just left of the right hand control key.
You can also press shift plus f10 for the same result.
As you can see, the process is very simple.
Conclusion
The changes done to the Start Menu in Windows 7 improve in subtle ways the way you work with it. The search box and Jump Lists are a major benefit as they allow you to quickly start the applications you need to use, without having to scroll down long lists of installed applications.
If you have some cool tips on how to improve the Start Menu and the way it is organized, don't hesitate to send me a comment and I will share it in future tips.
I have a compressed zipped file called " 109 Windows 7 Shortcuts.zip" I would be glad to send to those wishing to check it out.

Quotes for the day

Quote For Today:
The future is not some place we are going to but one we are creating. The paths to it are not found but made.

Quote For Today:
Used: I am responsible. Although I may not be able to prevent the worst from happening, I am responsible for my attitude toward the inevitable misfortunes that darken life. Bad things do happen; how I respond to them defines my character and the quality of my life. I can choose to sit in perpetual sadness, immobilized by the gravity of my loss, or I can choose to rise from the pain and treasure the most precious gift I have, life itself.

Quote For Today:
The world uses physical and material measures to judge a person's worth. Yet, the true measure of those we love and respect is not counted by looks or possessions. It is a combination of the quirky and the kind and the uncommon way they do and say things that make them unique and dear to us.

Quote For Today:
Many persons have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained
through self-gratification but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.

Quote For Today:
Peace is not the absence of trouble. Peace is the presence of God.

Quote For Today:
A preoccupation with the future not only prevents us from seeing the present as it
is but often prompts us to rearrange the past.

Quote For Today:
Challenges are gifts that force us to search for a new center of gravity. Don't fight them. Just find a different way to stand.

Quote For Today:
A woman has amazing strengths. She can deal with stress and carry heavy burdens. She smiles when she feels like screaming. She sings when she feels like crying. She cries when she's happy and laughs when she's afraid. Her love is unconditional. There's only one thing wrong with her... she forgets what' she's worth.

Surviving High School Sightless
BY BELINDA ACOSTA
Chas Demus, a student at the Texas School for the Blind & Visually Impaired,
is featured in the documentary The Eyes of Me, premiering March 2 on KLRU.
Promotional materials describe The Eyes of Me as "an extraordinary look at
four blind teenagers," but it is the teenagers featured in this film who
seem extraordinary. It's hard enough to be a teenager, but to be blind as
well? That takes a special kind of determination and courage.
Filmed at the Texas School for the Blind & Visually Impaired in Austin over
the course of a typical year, the next film in the PBS Independent Lens
series features four students at various stages in their lives. Some have
been blind since childhood; some are newly blind after a sighted life. In
addition to learning how to cope with their blindness, they must cross the
threshold from childhood to adulthood with all the challenges, fears, and
boneheaded missteps that befall any teenager.
Filmmaker Keith Maitland, a University of Texas alum, has selected four very
different and intriguing subjects for The Eyes of Me. Newly 17, Chas is more
than ready to leave the residential high school and seek the independent
living his age allows him. When the film begins, he's scored a small
apartment he shares with a roommate and quickly sets up his ministudio to
work on his lifelong passion: hip-hop poetry (the title of the film is taken
from one of his pieces). But Chas ruefully discovers that independence is
not all smooth sailing.
The adorable Denise, from the Dallas area, comes from a loving, supporting
family, but life for the 15-year-old at her old high school was traumatic.
Teased and shunned, she sank into a depression. Moving to Austin to complete
her high school years marks a huge emotional challenge for her and her
family, but one that seems tailor-made for the shy girl ready to release her
inner butterfly.
As class valedictorian, Meagan is poised and ready to enter college, no
matter what obstacles stand in her way.
If there's a tragic situation in Maitland's film, it would be that of Isaac,
a Paris, Texas, native. The newly blind freshman lost his sight due to a
detached retina. The reason? The health insurance his grandparents and
guardians had signed up for had not gone into effect at the time of his
injury, and Isaac was refused treatment.
What makes The Eyes of Me stand apart from other documentaries is its use of
digital rotoscopic animation. This type of animation is best described as a
tracing of live-action footage, frame by frame, to give a graphic quality to
the final moving images. (Examples of the technique that resembles what is
seen in The Eyes of Me include the Charles Schwab "Talk to Chuck"
commercials on TV and the Richard Linklater films Waking Life and A Scanner
Darkly).
The shift from live-action to animation is seamless and works best when Chas
or Isaac are talking about the transition from being sighted to how they now
experience the world in blindness. Although visually interesting, the
animation is not used all that often, and when it is used elsewhere in the
film, it seems a shade gimmicky and unnecessary. But the animation is not
the reason to view The Eyes of Me. It's the concurrent stories of four young
people discovering a new vision of themselves as they approach adulthood
that ultimately keep your interest.
In addition to its premiere on KLRU, The Eyes of Me will screen Wednesday,
Feb. 24, at 7pm at the Austin City Limits Studio (Studio 4D on the fourth
floor of the Communication Building on the University of Texas campus, on
the corner of Guadalupe and Dean Keeton). Following the screening, a
discussion of the film will occur with filmmaker Maitland, producer Patrick
Floyd, and Chas Demus and Meagan McComic (two students featured in the
film). Lisa McWilliams,
executive director of the Mobile Film School, will moderate. The event is
free and open to the public.
The Eyes of Me airs Tuesday, March 2, at 9pm on PBS.
