Hey there! I'm Alix Shadonnay, your friendly Café friend.
I hope that everyone is enjoying their week thus far and today it's time for us to introduce you to one of our favourite women; Donna J. Jodhan, blogger, writer, editorialist, researcher, advocate, plus so much more.
Today, Donna has a very personal experience to share with you. Here now is Donna and I wish you a great day.
What happens when things fall?
This is one of the most difficult challenges of my life. What really happens when things fall? In the ordinary world, a mainstream person simply bends over and picks up the fallen object or if the object has managed to roll away to some out of sight location, the mainstream person simply uses their vision to find it.
For me, the process is quite different. If something falls out of my grasp I can usually locate it by using my sense of hearing to determine where it has fallen but it all depends on whether or not it makes noise as it clatters to the floor. If the object in question falls on to a hard surface, then the task is not too difficult but if it decides to roll away from me then I am in trouble. If the object falls on to a carpet, or if the object itself does not make any noise as it falls, then all hell breaks loose.
A funny thing happened to me a few days ago. A friend was over helping me with some computer related stuff and on his way out he noticed something small lying on my carpet. When he picked it up and put it in my hand I realized that it was an SD card. To my horror I realized that the card had been lying on my carpet for almost three weeks during which time I had vacuumed around that spot a few times. The card had slipped out of my MP3 player over three weeks ago and I never knew that it did because I had not had cause to use my player during that time.
O boy! What if my vacuum cleaner had swallowed up my SD card? I would never have known and would only have known when I went to use my MP3 player and even at that! I would never have known what happened to my poor SD card. Horrifying and terrifying! Ah yes! The joys of having to deal with falling objects that do not make sounds and noises.
I'm Donna J. Jodhan your accessibility and special needs business consultant asking you to go out there and help educate the rest of the world about some of the challenges that blind and visually impaired persons face when it comes to falling objects that do not make sounds or noises.

Ten Free Sites For Scanning Your Computer For Viruses
This article talks about ten free sites for scanning your computer for viruses.
The link to these ten free sites is at the end of the article.
When you go to the link, arrow down the page.
You will find several links to places for scanning your computer for free.
Use any of these ten sites to scan your PC for problems.
With so much technology becoming cloud based, it's no surprise that the companies that create anti-virus software are moving right along with the trend. This article from the beingPC site has a good list of companies that have online scanners.
Several of the companies listed are familiar and likely to be recognized by many.
Most of the scanners install some type of software on your system (usually small) so the online scan will work, so it's a good idea to backup any data that might be lost, along the lines of "not likely to happen but better safe than sorry" idea.
Just a note, scanning takes more time on slower connections, something to keep in mind before you start.

Step 2: Export the Address Book to a .csv file
Important Make sure that you follow this step if you use multiple identities in Outlook Express.
Microsoft Outlook Express 5.x and Microsoft Outlook Express 6.0 use a Windows Address Book (.wab) file to store Address Book data. The individual data for each identity is stored in a folder by user name within the .wab file that is used.
The only way to separate the Address Book data for different identities is to export the data to a .csv file while you are logged in as a specific identity. If the .wab file becomes dissociated from the user identities, the data can be exported only as one total. In this case, the data cannot be exported folder by folder.
There is another reason to export the .wab file to a .csv file. If the .wab file not exported to a .csv file, but the .wab file is shared with Microsoft Outlook, the addresses are stored in the personal folders (.pst) file in Outlook. When you export the file to a .csv file by using the File menu in Outlook Express, the correct contacts are exported. However, if the Address Book is shared with Outlook, you cannot use the File menu option to export from the Address Book. This option is unavailable.
To export the Address Book to a .csv file, follow these steps:
When Outlook Express is opened:
From The Keyboard:
1. Press alt plus f for opening the "file menu.
2. Press the letter e to reach the "export sub-menu."
3. Press the letter A for "addressbook." You are actually placed on this option by default.
4. Choose the text file format.
5. Press enter on "Export.
6. Locate "browse" and press the spacebar..
7. Select the Mail Backup folder that you created.
Do this by:

You will hear deskdop closed.
b. Arrow to the right once to expand the folder.
c. Press the first letter of the mail back up folder and press enter.
8. In the File Name box, type address book backup, and then tab to save and press the spacebar.
9. Tab to "next" and press the spacebar.
10. Tab across and press the spacebar to select the check boxes for the fields that you want to export.
11. Tab to "finished" and press enter.
12. Tab to "okay" and press enter.
Mouse Users:
1. On the File menu, click Export.
2. Then click Address Book.
3. Click Text File (Comma Separated Values), and then click Export.
4. Click Browse.
5. Select the Mail Backup folder that you created.
6. In the File Name box, type address book backup, and then click Save.
7. Click Next.
8. Click to select the check boxes for the fields that you want to export, and then click Finish.
9. Click OK, and then click Close.
Step 3: Export the mail account to a file
From The Keyboard:
1. Press alt plus T for tools.
2. Press the letter A for accounts.
3. Make sure the account you wish to use is selected.
4. Tab to export and press the spacebar.

25 Useful and Time Saving Computer Tips
Here is the original article where all the tips came from on Monday through Wednesday.
I am providing this in case someone wants the article as a complete package.
The link to the page were the article is located is found at the end of todays tip/article.
This is from Gizmo.com.
Windows and Mac users can take some time and tedium out of computing using these tips.
It's the little things that make using a computer easier and faster. Things that make using the internet easier, such as typing only the name of the site you want to go in your browser, no www.. If the address uses .com, hitting Ctrl + Enter on your keyboard will automatically add the .com and take you to the site. If a web address ends in .net, hit Shift + Enter, the .net will automatically be added and off you'll go to the site.
Not only that, but most browsers will take you to a .com address if all you do is type in the name.
Try typing "microsoft" (minus quotes), or a site you prefer to visit into your browser address bar, hit enter on your keyboard and see what happens. Want to go to a site that has a .org address? No problem, just type the site name, .org, (example: freerice.org)
hit enter on your keyboard, and your browser takes you there.
Those are a few tips off the top of my head, the article at digitizd.com has more.
Even better, the tips are organized into Windows/Mac, Windows only, and Mac only.

Functional Flash Drive Doesn't Work At The Office
I was recently asked by another member how to use a thumb drive to transfer files
between his computer at his work and his home computer, but the work computer will
not recognize the thumb drive. He wanted advice on how to fix this
*question: "My thumb drive works great at home, but when I took it into work to try
and copy some files so I could work at home, I plug it in and the little window never
opens so I cannot use it. What am I doing wrong"
*Answer: There are several possible reasons for this, and here's a few things to
try:
* One may be that Windows is "recognizing" the device, but isn't displaying the little
"Found new hardware" balloon for some reason (such as a Service isn't running). So
try this,
1. Open My computer and look for the drive there.
2. If it's there, great, just double-click it, or press enter on it. but if it's
not:
3. Try plugging the drive into a different USB port. It is possible that the one
you tried has gone bad. (It helps if you use an open port on the machine, and not
use a hub.) If that isn't it.
* 4. Ask your company's IT department if USB volumes have been disabled.
Many companies are turning off USB access to iPods/Media Players and thumb drives
(storage devices) in an effort to prevent data leakage. which is a fancy way of saying,
preventing the employees from walking out the door with the Company Secrets. If this
is indeed the case, you can ask that an exception be made in your case. If your request
is granted, they will re-"enable" USB storage devices on your machine.
But if the above does not solve the problem, It is possible that the drive letter
your thumb drive is pre-disposed to being assigned (say, "E:" or "F:"), is being
used by another device or "share" on the company network, and so it isn't being seen
as a volume (aka "drive").. you'll have a volume, but without a drive letter, Windows
won't "see" it and you can't use it.
Try the following in this case.
1. Move to "my computer" and press the application key (three from the right edge
of the spacebar) or Right-click on My Computer.
2. Arrow down to "manage" and press enter or click on this option.
3. Arrow down seven times to "storage" or click the "+" sign next to "Storage" to
expand the tree.
4. Arrow down three times to disc management or click on Disk Management.
You will now see all the volumes on your computer.
What we're looking for in our thumb drive issue is a volume that does not have a
letter.
5. If you see one, that will be the troublesome thumb drive, Press the application
key or right-click on it and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths." from the context
menu. A small window will open.
6. Press enter on the add button or click on it.
7. Another small window will open. Use the drop-down arrow next to "Assign the following
drive letter" and choose one of the letters (those shown will be "available" letters
on the company network). It really doesn't matter which letter you choose. Then click
OK, and OK again.
You should now be back in business, and you can use the thumb drive as you're used
to. Open My Computer again and you'll see the thumb drive and double-clicking it
will open it up.
* If these steps fail to allow Windows to see the USB thumb drive, submit a trouble
ticket to your company's IT department.

We grow great by dreams. All big men are dreamers. They see things in the soft haze of a spring day or in the red fire of a long winter's evening. Some of us let these great dreams die, but others nourish and protect them; nurse them through bad days till they bring them to the sunshine and light, which comes always to those who sincerely hope that their dreams will come true.

Hi everyone! I'm Heather DeMarco, your friendly Café friend and I would like to kick off this week with a really informative article. How Smart Phones are playing an important role in the lives of the Blind.
I invite you now to please see below and we thank our friends at http://www.sterlingcreations.ca for passing this along to us.
Make it a great day.
Smart phones give disabled help on the go
Omar El Akkad
Globe and Mail, Dec. 3, 2009
T.V. Raman is a researcher for Google Inc. He lives in Mountain View, Calif.
Every day, he takes the company shuttle bus home. Every day, the shuttle
driver drops him off at the same intersection. One day, a new driver dropped
him off on the opposite side of the street. This made it difficult for Mr.
Raman to get to his home, because he is blind.
The experience prompted Mr. Raman and his colleagues to work on a software
application that uses a smart phone's built-in capabilities to help users
figure out where they are."Now when you touch the phone, it tells you which
way you're pointing and where you are," he says of the application for
Google's Android mobile operating system, which
works audibly using global positioning system data. "The fact that you're
blind is your own business. The computer doesn't need to know that."
Since the dawn of the personal computer age, software developers have
created specialized products for disabled users. But more often than not,
that software was prohibitively expensive for many, and those who could
afford it were tied to their desktops, unable to use programs while on the
go.
But inventions like Mr. Raman's illustrate how the smart phone revolution -
which has turned once-simple phones into multipurpose devices equipped with
information about your location, your social calendar, your favourite
restaurant - is changing the way we live. Now, for a few hundred dollars,
users can buy the next generation
of Web-wired, GPS-consulting wonder phones, many of which have more
accessibility
software built in than most computers had just a few years ago.
And as the newest smart phones spur a wave of specialized applications, they
are also levelling the playing field. Disabled people are taking advantage
of built-in accessibility functions to use the same applications everybody
else does, while applications
originally intended for disabled users are proving popular with smart-phone
users in general.
"Making phones that are mainstream phones and are accessible with no
expensive software is really a step forward that we've seen only in the last
year or so," said Everett Zufelt, national advocacy co-ordinator with the
Canadian National Institute for the Blind in Toronto.
Google researcher T.V. Raman works on the Android Phone software with his
colleagues on an application for disabled people that uses a smartphone's
built-in capabilities. It allows [people with visual disabilities] to use
the same sort of applications that everybody else has access to."
The iPhone, for example, includes a technology called VoiceOver, which talks
to the user, telling him or her exactly what is on the touch-screen display.
The new version of Google's Android operating system includes a similar
capability, making phones much easier to use - not only for people with
visual disabilities but also for those who have reading disabilities such as
dyslexia.
"There's huge potential and tremendous benefits," said Stephane Doyon, a
blind engineer at Google's Montreal offices, who created in his spare time a
talking news-feed reader for Android phones.
"A cellphone is relatively cheap compared to special-purpose software and
computers." The cost of developing applications for those phones is also
relatively low, leading to a host of new software designed to make life
easier for those with disabilities.
For example, a group of students and researchers at the University of
Toronto is currently working on an iPhone application called TimbreMap. It
is designed to give users audible information about their surroundings to
help them differentiate between surfaces, such as park grounds or sidewalks.
"As you touch the phone's surface, different elements have different
sounds," explained
Jing Su, one of the graduate students working on the project. "We try to
give it a different texture and a different sound. Even though the phone's
glass surface is smooth, with the right kind of sound, you can trick the
brain into giving you tactile feedback."
TimbreMap's designers also hope to give it functionality in indoor
locations - where the phone can't access GPS data which rely on direct
access to satellites - by checking building blueprints. If successful, an
application initially designed for users with visual disabilities may well
become popular with any smart-phone user who simply wants to navigate a
sprawling shopping mall.
When another group of U of T researchers began work on software that uses
address book and geographic data to try to predict who a user is likely to
meet at any given location, they intended it to be used by people with
memory impairments. But the project soon drew interest from corporate
executives and others with large, unwieldy
address books, who saw the software as a streamlining aid.
At the same time, disabled users are taking advantage of the accessibility
aspects of smart phones to use the same software as everybody else.
Thanks to the audible screen reader on Mr. Zufelt's mobile phone, the most
commonly used application on his device is one that gives the CNIB executive
access to the popular microblogging site Twitter.
"For the most part, people [with disabilities] want to have the same
devices," he said. "It's cool, it's mainstream - we don't want something
that's designed differently."

Greetings everyone! I'm Jayna Sheffield, your favorite Café friend and it's that time again for us to introduce you to Donna J. Jodhan; a woman of the world! A woman with a mission, and one that will not allow her blindness to stop her from marching!
Today, Donna has a very personal editorial to share with you and we invite you now to tune in.
Make it a great day!
The doctors did not tell me
This is nothing new when it comes to the communication between doctor and patient but for those of us who are afflicted with a vision loss! It is even more difficult to deal with. For the mainstream patient they are at least able to access their information through their files but when you are unable to read your own files because they are in printed format! That is an entirely different issue.
So here's what happened to me. In January 2004 the doctors performed surgery on me to reattach my torn retina and at the same time they gave me a new cornea. I lost almost all of my vision but no one really told me why. A second surgery was performed in September of that year and I clearly remember the cornea surgeon telling me that he was very positive that I would receive some restored vision but you know what? It did not happen and again no one really wanted to tell me why despite all of my questions. Then horrors of all horrors! I did not discover the truth until January of 2007 and the discovery came purely by accident.
I had requested a copy of my files from my family doctor and it was when my friend was casually flipping through the pages that she stumbled across a letter that my eye surgeon had written to my family doctor. The letter was explosive and explicit and emphatically stated that during my surgery of January 2004 my eye had been damaged due to blood trickling into it. What a horrible discovery! Devastating and earth shattering! I could not believe that after three years I had to discover this all on my own and it only came through pure coincidence. My friend wept while I sobbed uncontrollably. Why no one ever thought to tell me would always be forever a dark and mysterious secret.
I'm Donna J. Jodhan your friendly accessibility advocate wishing you a terrific day and begging you to go out there and urge your doctors to start being more honest with you whenever there is something difficult for them to share with their patients.

Hello there! It's your friendly Café friends and we're here once more to brighten up your day.
Today we have a pick me up article to share with you. An enlightening one for you to ponder over.
Here it is.
Make it a great day.
Certain Phrases You Shouldn't Enter In Search Engines
BBC NEWS
Warning on search engine safety
Some net searches are leading users to websites that expose them to spam, spyware and other dangerous downloads, reveals a report.
According to the research the most dangerous words to search for are "free screensavers".
The report found that 64 percent of the sites found using this phrase were flagged as causing problems for users.
The authors urged search sites to tighten up rules to ensure users are not inadvertently exposed to harm.
Dangerous game
It is well known that visiting sites offering porn, gambling and free MP3s leaves users at serious risk of falling victim to spyware and adware. However, the research by Ben Edelman and Hannah Rosenbaum reveals that those carrying out searches for innocuous subjects are at risk too.
The report looked at the websites returned for 1,394 popular keywords searches found via Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL and Ask. The results returned for each search term were then analysed using the Site Advisor security tool. Once installed this piece of software warns users when they browse websites known to be dangerous.
The most benign of the pages that Site Advisor flags up try to change browser settings, to redirect people to ad sites, and the most dangerous deluge users with spam or bundle adware and spyware in with downloads.
In one case signing up with one site led to a test e-mail address getting more than 300 spam messages per week.
DANGEROUS KEYWORDS
Free screensaver
Bearshare
Screensavers
Winmx
Limewire
Download Yahoo messenger
Lime wire
Free ringtones
Some of these risky sites use security flaws and loopholes in browsers to install software without users' knowledge and can lead to that machine being hijacked or to a user losing personal data.
The riskiest search terms were associated with downloads (such as "screensavers" and "free ringtones") and file-sharing (such as "Bearshare" and "limewire"). Searching under these categories returned a substantial proportion of dangerous sites.
The authors speculate that spammers and scammers are turning to websites to try to snare victims as efforts are made to stop spam before it reaches e-mail inboxes.
"Where internet users go, attackers follow," wrote the authors.
Across all searches approximately 4 to 6 percent of sites returned were flagged as dangerous.
The authors noted that this was more "alarming" than it first appeared because American net users carry out almost 6 billion searches per month. This translates to 285 million clicks on these potentially dangerous sites every month.
"Even a single visit to a dangerous site can have serious and lasting implications for the average internet user," wrote the authors. The number of risky sites increases when users click on sponsored results, the adverts generated to accompany particular search terms. Dangerous sites are two to four times as common in sponsored results found the research.
"We are troubled by the untrustworthiness of search engines' ads," said the authors.
The authors urged the search engines to get much tougher on those who buy adverts to accompany searches and expose those that abuse visitors. "We're alarmed by the scope of these problems - by the many ways search engines lead users to sites that can be harmful, or provide wrong information.

Hello there! I'm Matt Chadwick, your friendly Café friend and I am here to help you kick off a brand new week.
Today, I have a beautiful article to share with you. One that shows how the Internet can benefit those who are blind.
We thank our friends at http://www.sterlingcreations.ca for sending this along to us.
Make it a great day!
The Internet Archive: An Untapped Resource for the Blind
by Daniel B. Frye
Today blind people can and do access record amounts of written
information through the emergence of scanning and digitization and assistive
technology. We read newspaper articles, books, and other written materials
using NFB NEWSLINE for the BlindR, the National Library Service for the
Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), Recording for the Blind
and Dyslexic, Bookshare, and Audible.com among other resources. Even when
something is not available in an accessible format, current technology
allows relatively easy access to printed texts. Because of the rapid
evolution of access to information, some may even feel overwhelmed by the
array of accessible reading options now available.
The Braille Monitor has recently learned of another Internet-based
resource that makes more than 1.8 million digital books and other material
freely available to everyone with access to the Internet. Founded by
Brewster Kahle in 1996, the Internet Archive, a nonprofit digital library
based in San Francisco, California, promotes universal access to knowledge.
Although the Internet Archive management team did not have the needs of
blind people in mind originally, they have been receptive to suggestions for
making their vast content accessible to blind computer users. Toward this
end the Internet Archive is exploring a partnership with the National
Federation of the Blind to digitize and preserve our audio and video files
through a grant application to the Institute for Museum and Library
Services, a federal agency. The Archive is also negotiating with the NLS to
use its disability-verification system so they can provide accessible
formats of copyrighted materials to eligible blind and print-disabled
people in the United States. Moreover the Internet Archive has already
been producing its downloadable collection of books (most older and in the
public domain) in the internationally recognized DAISY format.
According to Linda Frueh, the Internet Archive's regional director
for Washington, D.C., Kahle and his wife established a foundation and
launched the Internet Archive with the goal of recording the entire
Internet. Frueh said that Kahle reasoned, "Here's an enormous, new
technology changing from day to day, and nobody's recording it." Using
Web-harvesting technology, a specially designed computer program that copies
and saves Web pages, the organization has been preserving the evolving
Internet. Kahle began by conducting a bimonthly Internet crawl. "We have
one hundred and fifty billion Web pages archived since 1996," Frueh said.
She explained further, "The way people access old Web pages is through the
Wayback Machine, a search engine for all of the old Web pages archived at
in the NFB, for instance, could use the Wayback Machine to review the
evolution of our Internet site for the last fourteen years.
Having launched the Internet archiving project, the organization
expanded its goals to digitize other media. Its online library now posts
digital books, music, audio recordings, films, software collections, and
more from its Website. Everything is made available free of charge. "We
never have charged and never will charge for any of our content. Our goal
is to make as much information as possible available to everyone who wants
it; we're not invested in whether we provide information under our own
name or as the behind-the-scenes resource for other Internet services,"
Frueh
said.
Though much of this additional content may be of interest to blind
people, the greatest benefit to the blind will be the large digital book
collection it has already assembled. The most effective way to access
these
digital books from the Internet Archive is to visit its dedicated digital
book Website
sighted users who are interested only in downloading books will find it
easier to go directly to the dedicated digital Website. The
NFB is working with the Internet Archive to help evaluate and maximize the
accessibility of its several Websites. These are clearly growing in
popularity with a reported three million people a day visiting
The Internet Archive's book collection reflects its history of
working with academic institutions, libraries, and government agencies. It
has 3,324 books in its children's collection at
<http://www.archive.org/detail/iacl . For examples of scientific
literature scanned by the Archive from the Biodiversity Heritage Library,
visit
<http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org . The Archive has scanned over thirty-
three thousand items in this collection. Frueh says that the Internet
Archive also has the largest Arabic collection outside of the Middle East
and the Library of Congress. The Internet Archive digital library dwarfs the
NLS digital collection, but Frueh reports that her organization would be
delighted to explore expanding its partnership with NLS, allowing the
national library to make all of these titles available through its
frontline resources.
Readers should know that the Internet Archive, a member of the Open
Book Alliance, opposes the currently proposed Google Books settlement. The
Internet Archive and its supporters believe that the settlement as currently
drafted creates an uneven playing field in out-of-print book publishing, an
obscure area of debate among legal and academic scholars about one aspect of
copyright law. Its objections, however, have nothing to do with the
accessibility provisions and promise of rapid access to many digital books
that the Google Book agreement would generate.
Blind readers now have another significant resource at our disposal
that will enrich our lives. We can visit the Internet Archive and its
related Websites for study, work, and recreation. The NFB looks forward to
an ongoing and fruitful partnership with the Internet Archive.

Hey there! I'm Alix Shadonnay, your friendly Café friend and it's that time of week for us to introduce you to one of our favourite friends; Donna J. Jodhan.
We thank you for all of the positive feedback that we have been receiving on Donna's behalf and we hope that her editorials continue to be an inspiration to our readers.
Here now is Donna with a very personal editorial.
Make it a beautiful day!
The mystery of colors
To many of those who are unable to see colors, the word color remains a great mystery and at best a great desire to discover the unknown. As someone who was able to see colors all my life up until five years ago, I can faithfully tell you that it is practically impossible to teach someone who is unable to see colors what colors look like. This is one of the things that I miss the most; the inability to see colors.
One cannot hear colors or smell colors. One cannot feel colors or taste colors. One cannot sense colors or touch colors; but one can see colors if they are able to. I often wonder if there could be a way to teach a blind person what colors are all about but several of my friends who were born with no vision often remind me that colors do not really mean anything to them because they were never able to see them in the first place.
For me, colors mean the world to me and will probably always mean the world to me despite my loss of vision. You see, when I hear a word or think of something, I think of it through color. Whenever I smell or touch something I put a color to it. Whenever I play or compose music, my thoughts are covered with colors! I dream in color and I think in color!
Whenever I take those joyful jaunts down memory lane, I can see a sunrise as pure as gold. A sunset that is a soft pink. The placid sea that is a shade of royal blue and the sky that is a much lighter shade of blue. The big silver Air Canada jet bird, and the fast flowing silver water of the Niagara Falls. The big fat white snowflakes and the smiling red rose. My favorite color is yellow with blue running a comfortable second and red coming in third.
Colors will always play a very important part in my life. I used to depend on colors to identify objects but sadly no more. Now I use colors to remember persons and things and even as I write this there are some special memories that will forever remain imprinted on my mind such as: My beloved dad who passed on 21 years ago; in his light grey suit. My beloved brother Robert who passed on two years ago all decked out in his pilot's uniform; a handsome black uniform adorned with gold stripes. My beautiful mom standing before me in a turquoise dress forever and so much more.
I'm Donna J. Jodhan your friendly accessibility advocate wishing you a terrific day and inviting you to go out there and enjoy your world of colors. If you would like to learn more about how blind persons function without color then please visit www.nfb.org.
