Greetings everyone! I'm Jayna Sheffield, your friendly Café friend and it's time for me to introduce you to your favorite editor, blogger, writer, and advocate!
Meet Donna J. Jodhan, no stranger to the world of business and beliefs. Today, Donna has an editorial for you about the technology divide. Here now is Donna!
Make it a great day.
The technology divide
I think that the majority of mainstream persons would probably be shocked to hear me say that as technology rumbles along, the gap between what is available and what is accessible to blind and visually impaired persons is growing wider as time marches on. True it is that there have been some very telling strides with regard to the development and availability of technology for us, but on the other hand there are more and more gadgets, hardware, and software that are not accessible to us.
We can use special software known as screen readers to do such things as browse the Internet, read receive and send emails, and perform word-processing and spread-sheet functions but when it comes to being able to enjoy those new and exciting handheld gadgets? Well, that's another story. As the development of handheld gadgets continues to evolve at a breakneck speed, it is not the same when it comes to making them accessible to those with vision problems.
I have decided not to purchase an I pod because on the whole they require me to seek sighted assistance to use it. Instead, I have had to purchase a specially developed device that enables me to use it without having to depend on sighted assistance. This device is called the Victor Reader Stream and for an exorbitant price, I can now hear which keys I press and menus I navigate because this device has been built to give out voice responses to key commands. I am unable to use the mainstream PDA and as a result I have had to purchase a specially developed PDA for blind and visually impaired persons. One that emits voice responses. This device is called the Icon and its price is really high and why?
Like any specially developed device for blind and visually impaired persons, it is a common rule of thumb that the price is at least three times as much as the mainstream equivalent. Why is this? I can only say that maybe because of the small size of the blind and visually impaired persons market, companies need to charge a price that would bring them a profit. When it comes to the development of equivalent devices for blind and visually impaired persons, ones that talk or emit voice responses, the list includes cell phones, PDAs, I pods, language dictionaries, plus more. They are very well developed but the prices are sky high.
What really frustrates me is this! Why do we as blind and visually impaired persons need to depend on companies to take the extra step to develop products for us? Why is it so difficult for mainstream companies like Amazon to do so? For example: We are still waiting on Amazon to make their Kindle reader accessible to us. Apple has made some determined efforts but we need more mainstream companies like Apple to do the same. If you would like to learn more about the company that developed the Victor Reader Stream then please visit www.humanware.com.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan your friendly accessibility advocate wishing you a terrific day and encouraging you to go out there and start motivating companies to produce products that would be accessible to and usable by all.

10 Windows Command Line Tips You Should Check Out
1. Drag and drop files for a full path
Tired of typing the long pathnames for files/folders buried deep inside a folder tree? Just drag and drop the file onto the command prompt window and you will get the full path and filename reveal to you.
2. Copy and paste from/to the command line
Click on the icon in the title bar and choose Edit > Mark. Now, drag over the area you want to copy, hit Enter and the text is copied to the clipboard.
Similarly, you can click on the icon in the title bar and choose Paste to paste the text you already have on the clipboard. You can also do this by right-clicking inside the command prompt window
3. Hit F7 for command line history
Hit F7 and you will get a complete list of commands that you executed. Use the arrow keys to highlight the command you want to run again or just hit the number key corresponding to the command that you want to execute.
4. History keys
Use F1 to paste the previous command one character at a time, F2 (followed by a number) to paste the previous command up to the said number and F3 to paste the previous command.
5. Run multiple commands
You can run multiple commands by separating them with &&.
Note that this doesn't run the commands simultaneously. Instead, the command towards the left is run first and if it completes successfully then the second command will run. If the first command fails, then the second command will not run
6. Go fullscreen
Hit Alt+Enter and now you have the entire screen to enter your commands and view the output. Sadly,. this doesn't work as expected in Vista and you might have to do some additional tinkering.
7. Change window size
So you thought you knew the previous one? How would you change the size of the window?
Use the mode command. Use mode
8. Get help
Linux users turn to the man command when in doubt, while Windows users don't have complete manuals to refer.
All is not lost. You can get some help for most commands by using command /? or command -help. You can also use the help command to see a list of available commands, although the list is far from extensive.
9. Filter command output
If you are only interested in part of command output and don't want to spend time scanning the entire output, you can pass the output over to the find command. for example, use the next line to only list the entry for Firefox if it is running.
tasklist | find "firefox"
10. Sleep or pause for some time
If you have ever written a batch file and wanted to wait for a period of time before you start executing the next command, you might have been amazed to find the "sleep" command missing. You can however hack yourself a sleep command using ping! Use ping -n 5 127.0.0.1 > NUL 2>&1 to wait for 5 seconds. Be warned that the timing would not be exact so don't just bet your life on it.

Hello there! I'm Matt Chadwick, your friendly Café friend.
It's a brand new week and we are approaching the end of April with May waiting in the wings.
Today, I have a thought provoking article to share with you; all about the disappointment over web accessibility survey results.
We thank our friends at http://www.sterlingcreations.ca for passing this along to us.
Make it a great day!
Web Accessibility Surveys Results are Frequently Disappointing
By David Sloan
A recent exchange on Twitter has motivated me to write about the
contribution published surveys on web site accessibility make towards
understanding and addressing the problems that hold back web accessibility.
I've read, and continue to read, many, many papers presenting the results of
surveys of web sites, and I think we need surveys to look beyond just the
data and instead delve more deeply into why the results are as they are.
We've gone way beyond the
point where a paper simply reporting that a study of x web sites from y
sector revealed 'disappointing' levels of accessibility provides anything
more than a minor contribution. Surveys need to look at process not product.
In the early days of web accessibility, post WCAG 1.0 release, published
surveys of the accessibility of large numbers of web sites were relatively
rare (I'm distinguishing these from reviews of a single site conducted by or
on behalf of the development team, with the specific aim of identifying and
repairing barriers present). So whenever a new survey emerged, it usually
provided informative data on levels of conformance against WCAG 1.0, which
took time achieve any significant impact on the web design industry. The
data allowed us to see how particular sectors were faring, and which
checkpoints were most frequently not met.
The publicity surrounding a published accessibility survey that presented
data showing how poorly sites were dealing with WCAG conformance could also
be claimed to raise awareness of web accessibility in general, and more
specifically shame the organisations in question into doing something about
the barriers present on their site. The former effect probably did take
place, although I'd like to see concrete evidence that surveys actually have
a positive effect on the organisations whose sites were reviewed.
(Indeed, there have been concerns that surveys may have a negative impact on
'usable accessibility.' If the methodology used focuses excessively on a
technical measure of accessibility that becomes a highly public 'official'
ranking of each site's performance - with rewards for finishing high up a
ranking, there would be understandable pressures for site developers to
design to satisfy the surveyors and not disabled people.)
Many published surveys have had severe limitations in methodology and scope
- frequently conducted using automated tools only, using a subset of WCAG,
and often of the Home page only; and very, very rarely have researchers
extended their survey to contact each site's organisation for follow-up data
(a notable exception was a
study by Ronald Milliman in 2002). Several published surveys have appeared
as academic papers in a wide variety of journals (not just computing/HCI).
As the topic was initially relatively uncovered in academic literature, an
investigation into the accessibility of web sites in a particular sector -
be it higher education, government, e-commerce, tourism, or whatever - made
for an attractive publication topic. I should know, I wrote a couple! But at
least in the early days we had some data to help say ' hey, we all need to
do a bit better here'.
Over time, we've had some very high impact surveys, such as the
UK DRC Formal Investigation into web accessibility, published in 2004, and
which combined automated testing with manual inspections; evaluations with
disabled people and interviews with web developers. Just recently, at the
Accessing Higher Ground 2009 conference, Terrill Thompson presented data
from a longitudinal study that compared progress towards accessible content
between organisations who had received technical support and those who
hadn't.
Additionally, publications have presented accessibility survey data as part
of other valuable research activity, for example when testing new
methodologies and tools for large scale accessibility evaluation (important
in the real world for regulatory bodies as well as organisations with many
web pages), and testing how effective particular evaluation methodologies
could be in minimising false positives and false negatives (check the
proceedings of W4A
for papers by researchers such as Markel Vigo, Giorgio Brajnik and Bambang
Parmanto).
Putting aside limitations of scope and evaluation methodology, surveys have
not been so good at focusing on content providers and the content provision
circumstances. This is to some extent understandable, as it's easier to run
an automated tool across multiple sites than identify, contact and gather
data from all the content providers for each site.
Some exceptions are mentioned above - to add to these,
my thesis focused on the impact of accessibility audits on the recipient
organisations, and my research yielded a limited amount of information on
how organisations responded. A few surveys have specifically looked
perceptions on and attitudes to web accessibility for example Lazar et al's
2004 paper on
Improving web accessibility: a study of webmaster perceptions
and Bloor Research's 2009 survey), but we still don't know very much about
the organisational reasons as to why accessibility of a particular web site
is not as good as it could be.
As time goes by, therefore, the impact of a survey that presents data on web
accessibility diminishes, unless it adds something new to our understanding
of the problem. In 2009, it's not enough to simply claim that results are
'disappointing', and that web content authors must do better'. WCAG has
been
here for 10 years, so it's not as if we have no best practice; and people
and resources promoting and supporting web accessibility are easy to find. A
failure to acknowledge in a survey report that this has been a problem for
many years does a disservice to everyone who has been advancing the cause of
web accessibility (even if it also gives another stark reminder that there's
much work to do).
So if you conduct a survey of web sites and find accessibility barriers,
don't stop at reporting conformance levels. Find out why the barriers exist.
Is it a lack of awareness or training amonst the providers of the content
you surveyed? Is it a lack of involvement of disabled people in the design
process? Is it a lack of resources; of money; a lack of will, or lack of
prominence of accessibility in an organisation's business practice and
philosophy? Is it
sub-standard authoring tools, content management systems; quality assurance
systems? Is there another reason?
And whatever you find out, please share it with us!
http://58sound.com/2009/11/15/web-accessibility-surveys-results-are-frequent
ly-disappointing/

Getting dressed in the dark
For most blind and visually impaired persons, this is it! It does not really matter whether the lights are on or off; we literally get dressed in the dark because for the most part we are unable to see what we are putting on. True it is that some of us can see enough to decipher colors but as a general rule of thumb we are unable to see ourselves in the mirror and consequently we have no idea how we look when we step out in to the sighted world.
As for me: Up until five years ago I was able to see enough to decipher colors and I was able to match my clothes sufficiently so as not to look like a highlight or a clown when I went out. Now, things are different for me. I have had to spend a lot of time getting my mom to organize my closet for me. She has helped me to match up all of my clothes and I have had to organize them in such a way that I know exactly where to find what I need. I use a color detector to help me decipher colors. This nifty little gadget talks and for the most part is accurate enough to give me an idea as to the color of a piece of clothing but every now and then it goes a bit crazy and mucks up things for me.
Having had sight before helps me to deal with getting dressed in the dark but for those who were born not being able to see colors, it is very different. These persons do not understand the concept and meaning of color and as a result they need sighted assistance to help them match and coordinate their clothes. It is literally impossible to describe colors to someone who has never seen them. For how can one describe the color red? I could say that red is like a rose and someone who has never seen the color red would associate it with the scent of a rose and that would be the extent of their mental picture.
I use my sense of feel and touch to identify my clothes but if two pieces of clothing feel the same but are of different colors, then I use safety pins to help me. For example: If I have white and pink blouses that feel exactly the same, then I place a safety pin in the inner side of the collar of the white blouse.
My closet is super organized and it is imperative for me to always have everything in its proper place. Blouses and skirts, pants and jackets, sweaters and suits, shoes, and coats all have their designated places. If I make just one slip in replacing anything, then all hell breaks loose and I then have to spend time reorganizing. If you would like to learn more about the nifty color detector, then visit http://www.independentlivingaids.org.
I'm Donna J. Jodhan your accessibility and special business needs consultant wishing you a terrific day and urging you to go out there and tell the rest of the world that yes! Blind and visually impaired persons are able to get dressed on their own despite not being able to see what they're doing.

Hello there! It's your friendly Café team and today we have lots of tips for you from one of our favorite friends; Steve.
Here now is Steve and we hope you enjoy his very useful tips.
Make it a great day!
Steve's daily tips

Grilling On Skewers
When using wooden skewers for kabobs, soak in cold water for 10 to 30 minutes to
prevent them from burning. Thread shrimp onto skewers lengthwise so they won't curl
as they grill. They're also less likely to fall into the fire.

Onion And Garlic Odors
To deodorize a plastic storage container in which onions or garlic were stored, wash thoroughly, then stuff a crumpled piece of newspaper in the container, and snap on the lid. In a few days the smell will disappear.
_________________________
Reheating Refrigerated Bread
To warm biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated, place them in a microwave
with a cup of water. The increased moisture will keep the food moist and help it
reheat faster.
_________________________
Preparing Meats For Cooking
Leave a thin layer of fat on steaks and roasts during cooking to preserve juiciness.
Trim fat after cooking. Pat steaks, cubes and pot roasts dry with paper toweling for better browning. To make cutting into strips for stir-frying easier, partially freeze beef to firm. Salt beef after cooking or browning; salt draws out moisture and inhibits browning.

Cleaning With Mouthwash?
Mouthwash fights germs in your mouth, so why not in the rest of the bathroom? Pour 1/4 cup alcohol-based mouthwash, the cheap, generic kind, into your toilet and let sit for a half-hour. Swish around with a brush, then flush. It will sanitize and deodorize the bowl.

Egg Tips
Buying eggs
At the store, open the carton and inspect the eggs to see whether there are any broken or cracked eggs and also test the weight by holding one in your hand. The heavier the egg, the fresher it is.
When eggs are really fresh, the air cell within them is very small. As the eggs age, moisture is lost and is replaced by air, which means that the eggs will become lighter and lighter in weight, as the air cell grows bigger and the egg becomes less fresh.
The way in which the eggs are stored can also affect their quality and freshness.
Storing eggs
You should store the eggs in the refrigerator at a constant temperature of 40 degrees or below. Temperatures above 40 degrees may lead bacteria to grow and rapidly multiply.
Keep the eggs in the original carton and place them on one of the shelves inside the fridge, where the temperature is cold and consistent.
Do not store the eggs inside the fridge door, where warm air enters the fridge each time the door is opened. Eggs may be kept for up to five weeks if stored properly in the refrigerator.
Eggs are susceptible to changes in temperature, which can result in loss of quality.
Make sure that the eggs are kept in the same position as when they were packaged, with the pointed end facing downwards, as this prevents any damage to the air cell.
Keeping the eggs in their original carton is very important, as the protective cardboard slows down moisture loss and protects the eggs from the absorption of strong odors and flavors, through their porous shells, from nearby strong-smelling foods. The best before date can also be seen if the eggs are kept in the original packaging.
Some people store eggs in a cool larder or room, as many recipes call for eggs to be used at room temperature; however, eggs will deteriorate quicker at a warmer temperature. 24 hours of storage in the refrigerator is the same as 4 to 5 days in a cool room. Eggs stored in a cool room, should really be consumed within two weeks.
To warm eggs up to room temperature for certain recipes, either remove the eggs from the refrigerator at least 30 minutes before needed, or place the eggs in a bowl of very warm water for several minutes.
Freezing Eggs:
How to freeze an egg
It is possible to freeze eggs, but they must be removed from their shells and placed in a small airtight container or freezer bag.
If you wish to freeze whole eggs, beat the eggs until they have blended together and place them in an airtight plastic container. Label the container with the date and the number of eggs.
The same can be carried out for egg whites, but egg yolks require a bit more care. Beat the egg yolks in a bowl and add a pinch of salt if they are to be used for savory dishes, or a pinch of sugar, for sweet dishes. This will stop the yolks from becoming too thick as they freeze over time. Pour the egg yolks into an airtight container, label the container and place in the freezer.
Defrost frozen eggs in the refrigerator overnight, never at room temperature and use them as soon as they have defrosted.

Using A Dishwasher
Using a dishwasher actually uses about 35 percent less water than washing dishes
by hand. And, if you skip the drying cycle and let the dishes air dry you'll use
about 15 percent less electricity. But, always make sure that the dishwasher has
a full load before running it. Although a dishwasher saves on water, running several
half loads per day will end up wasting more than it saves.

Refresh And Protect Wicker Patio Furniture
You notice your wicker chairs are in need of a spruce up. First, wipe them down with a damp cloth to remove any dust and dirt. Then lightly brush the furniture with vegetable oil and rub in using a soft lint free cloth. The oil fills in cracks in the fiber and creates a protective moisturizing seal.

2. Feeling tired in the afternoon, put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber.
Cucumbers are a good source of B Vitamins and Carbohydrates that can provide that quick pick-me-up that can last for hours.
3. Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower?
Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror, it will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance.
4. Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds?
Place a few slices in a small pie tin and your garden will be free of pests all season long.
The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area.
5. Looking for a fast and easy way to remove cellulite before going out or to the pool?
Try rubbing a slice or two of cucumbers along your problem area for a few minutes, the photochemical in the cucumber causes the collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite. Works great on wrinkles too!!!
6. Want to avoid a hangover or terrible headache?
Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed and wake up refreshed and headache free.
Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients the body lost, keeping everything in equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover and headache!!
7. Looking to fight off that afternoon or evening snacking binge?
Cucumbers have been used for centuries and often used by European trappers, traders and explorers for quick meals to thwart off starvation.
8. Have an important meeting or job interview and you realize that you don't have enough time to polish your shoes?
Rub a freshly cut cucumber over the shoe, its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine that not only looks great but also repels water.
9. Out of WD 40 and need to fix a squeaky hinge?
Take a cucumber slice and rub it along the problematic hinge, and voila, the squeak is gone!
10. Stressed out and don't have time for massage, facial or visit to the spa?
Cut up an entire cucumber and place it in a boiling pot of water, the chemicals and nutrients from the cucumber will react with the boiling water and be released in the steam, creating a soothing, relaxing aroma that has been shown to reduce stress in new mothers and college students during final exams.
11. Just finished a business lunch and realized you don't have gum or mints?
Take a slice of cucumber and press it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds to eliminate bad breath, the photochemical will kill the bacteria in your mouth responsible for causing bad breath.
12. Looking for a 'green' way to clean your faucets, sinks or stainless steel?
Take a slice of cucumber and rub it on the surface you want to clean, not only will it remove years of tarnish and bring back the shine, but it won't leave streaks and won't harm your fingers or fingernails while you clean.
13. Using a pen and made a mistake?
Take the outside of the cucumber and slowly use it to erase the pen writing, also works great on crayons and markers that the kids have used to decorate the walls!!

Thinking About Investing In A Crockpot?
Here are a few tips to keep in mind:
* Make sure to get one with a removable liner.
It is easier to clean.
* Buy one size bigger than you think you need. You'll find yourself using it for all sorts of things and you'll wish it were bigger.
* The traditional crockpot, where the heat encloses the crockery insert all around, as opposed to the kind where the heat is just from the bottom (more commonly called a slow cooker) provides more even, faster cooking and works best with most of the recipes you'll find.

Hello there! I'm Heather DeMarco, your friendly Café friend and I hope that everyone had a great weekend.
Today, I'd like to kick off the weak with a very interesting article that discusses a prototype beeping basketball that could benefit blind basketball players.
I invite you to read on and I thank the folks at http://www.sterlingcreations for passing this along to us.
Make it a great day!
PROTOTYPE BEEPING BASKETBALL
A team of electrical and computer engineering students at the Rose-Hulman
Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind., has created a prototype
beeping
basketball for the blind. The students devised a simple beeping mechanism
housed within a Spalding Infusion basketball. The beeps help a person who is
blind locate and maneuver the ball. The basketball's sound device utilizes a
microcontroller, amplifier, dynamic cone speaker, hearing aid batteries and
a custom electronic circuit board, all enclosed in an aluminum tube,
matching the size and weight of the self-inflating pump originally designed
to be
inserted into the ball. Another sound emitter is enclosed in a plastic box;
it attaches to a backboard with Velcro, so that players know where to shoot.
The team hopes that this prototype will see mass distribution.

Greetings everyone! I'm Jayna Sheffield, your friendly Café friend and it's that time for me to introduce you to our dear friend Donna J. Jodhan. A woman of the world who walks the talk; not talk the talk. Donna is one of the most committed persons that i have ever met and today she is here to discuss the inaccessibility of PDF content. Here now is Donna. Make it a great day.
The problem with PDF content
By Donna J. Jodhan
That's the crazy thing that so many content designers just do not understand. They continue to put all of their efforts into designing pretty PDF content but at the end of the day it is totally inaccessible to blind and visually impaired persons. Why you ask? Very simple. PDF content is made up of an image that cannot be deciphered by screen readers. In other words; PDF files are image-based instead of textual-based. Blind and visually impaired persons use screen readers to surf the Internet.
More and more online forms are being designed in PDF format and as a result of this blind and visually impaired persons are being deprived of their right to privacy and confidentiality. How is this? Simple! If a form is in PDF format it means that blind and visually impaired persons need to depend on sighted assistance to help them complete it. It is frustrating, scary, and a downright violation of our right to confidentiality and privacy. There is a way for all of this to be dealt with and it starts with the content developer using the appropriate tags to format the PDF content so that it is made accessible and usable.
What most content developers still fail to understand is this: if they take the additional time to tag their PDF content appropriately, they will not only be making it accessible to blind and visually impaired persons; they will also be making it accessible and usable to the print disabled, the technically shy, and to those who are not technically savvy. Before you start to wonder who all of these people are, please allow me to elaborate.
The print disabled - those who are unable to read because of either physical, mental, or visual challenges.
The technically shy or not technically savvy - those who have difficulty coping with modern technology and who work better with more simple environments. In short, the millions of aging baby boomers who did not grow up with the Internet at their fingertips.
I personally find PDF content to be frustrating, a useless and time-consuming obstacle for me to deal with, and a downright insult to my right to privacy and confidentiality. I am going to give you an URL that you can visit in order to learn why PDF content does not benefit the blind and visually impaired.

I'm Donna J. Jodhan your friendly accessibility advocate wishing you a terrific day and urging you to go out there and start educating the rest of the world as to why PDF content does not benefit blind and visually impaired persons.
